Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFTGE.
BELT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Application fileo June 8, 1906. Serial No. 320,881.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRWIN G. LONGE- NEGKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethtown, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Belt, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to belts, and has for its object to provide improved means for retaining the belt in position on the trousers without the employment of the usual beltstraps.
A further object of the invention is to provide a belt having a plurality of loops slidably mounted thereon and provided. with flexible extensions adapted to engage the buttons or other fastening devices on the trousers.
A further object is to provide a belt the loops of which may be folded downwardly over the free edge of the waistband of the trousers to assist in supporting the undergarments.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability, and efficiency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
. With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is'a perspective view of a belt constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in position on the trousers. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the belt inverted and the flexible extensions attached to the buttons on the inner face of the waistband.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The device consists of a strap or belt 5, formed of leather, canvas, or other suitable material and having one end thereof formed with a buckle 6 and its opposite end provided with a plurality of perforations 7 and adapted to receive the tongue of the buckle in the ordinary manner.
Slidably mounted on the belt are a plurality of loops or straps 8, preferably six in number, as shown, and each provided with a flexible extension 9, having a slot or opening 10 formed therein for engagement with the buttons on the trousers, thereby to support the belt in position on said trousers without the employment of the usual belt-straps.
The loops or straps 8 are reinforced and strengthened by substantially U-shaped metallic strips 11, interposed between the walls of the loops and retained in position in any suitable manner, as by a double row of stitching 12, there being a similar row of stitching 13 at the juncture of the loops and extensions, as shown, to prevent accidental displacement of the reinforcing-strips 11 and also to assist in retaining the loops in position on the belt. e
In using the device the belt is passed around the waist in the usual manner and fastened with the buckle, after which the flexible button-loops are fastened on the buttons 14, thus retaining the belt in position on the trousers and effectually preventing accidental -displacement of the same. When the belt is used for supporting undergarments, the former is inverted and the flexible button-loops or extensions folded downwardly over the top of the waistband of the trousers into engagement with the buttons or similar fastening devices on the inner face of the waistband, the upper edge of the undergarment being previously threaded over the button, as best shown in Fig. 3 of thedrawings. When the device is used in this manner, it will be seen that the loops 9 not only serve to hold the belt in position on the trousers, but also assist in looking the undergarment on the fastening devices. If desired, however, the belt may be placed in position on the outside of the trousers with the flexible button-engaging loops extending vertically from the upper edge of the belt for engagement with the buttons on the trousers instead of having the llpops depending from the belt, as shown in TIaving thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A belt adapted to engage the exterior walls of the trousers and having a plurality of loops slidably mounted thereon and retained in position by a transverse row of stitching, one end of each loop being projected beyond the stitching to form a flexible extension adapted to engage the buttons of said trousers, said loops being reinforced by U-shaped metallic strips.
2 A belt adapted to engage the exterior walls of the trousers and having a plurality of rigid loops slidably mounted thereon and each provided with a flexible extension adapted to be folded over the free edge of the waistband of the trousers for engagement with the adjacent suspender-buttons.
3. The combination with an outer garment having fastening devices secured to the inner walls thereof, an undergarment supported by said fastening devices, and a belt engaging the exterior Walls of the outer garment and having a plurality of loops slidably mounted thereon and provided with flexible extensions adapted to be folded downwardly over the adjacent edge of said outer garment and in contact with the undergarment for engagement with said fastening devices.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
