UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINNA JANSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENDERS AND WAIST-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,641, dated August 22, 1899.
Application filed June 28, 1899- To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNA J ANSEN, of the city of New York, (Astoria, Long Island City, borough of Queens,) in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Suspenders and WVaist-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 5
This invention relates to improvements in devices for sustaining a dress-skirt and other articles of Womens wear and also for holding down shirt-waists and the like; and the object is to provide an article of this character of simple and light construction, by means of which a skirt may be easily supported from the shoulders of the wearer and which will effectually hold down a waist in its proper position with relation to the skirt.
I will describe a suspenders and waistholder embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a section showing its application to a waist and skirt.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a belt of any suitable material, preferably of fabric, and having a buckle 2 for securing its two ends together. Connected to the belt are suspenders or shoulder-straps 3 4. These suspenders or shoulder-straps are crossed at the back, and they are secured by stitching to the upper edge of the belt 1. The rear ends extend downward below the plane of the belt, forming tabs, as indicated at 5. These tabs are designed to be passed through buttonholes formed in the back portion of a shirtwaist at the waist portion, as indicated at so in Fig. 2. When in this position, the tabs will extend on the outer side of the waist material and the lower walls of the but-tonholes will engage the tabs at their connection with the belt. On the outer side each tab 5 has a fastening device, here show as a hook 6, with which an eye 7 on the waist of a dressskirt may be engaged for the purpose of supporting the skirt. At opposite sides straps 8 depend from the belt, and these straps are provided at the ends with fastening devices, here shown as buttons 9, with which the stock- Serial No. 722.203. (No model.)
ing-supporters may be engaged. Also con= nected to opposite sides of the belt are straps 10, to which divergent straps 11 12 are cons nected, and these divergent straps 11 and 12 are provided at their ends with fastening devices, here shown as safety-pins 13. 1 These devices are for engaging witha dress-skirt to hold its lower portion suspended during rainy 1 or muddy weather. At the rear and front are straps 14; 15, provided with suitable fas-- tening devices 16 at their lower ends. The suspenders or shoulder-straps are provided with buckles 17, so that they may be readily adjusted in length to suit the wearer.
It is obvious that when a skirt is supported on the hooks 6 the skirt will prevent the tabs from being drawn out of the openings in the shirt-waist.
A device embodying my improvements may be made and sold at a comparatively small cost, and as the weight of the suspended articles is brought to bear upon the shoulders of the wearer it is obvious that very little ex= ertion will be required of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, I
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device for the purpose described, a belt, suspenders or shoulder-straps attached to the belt, the rear ends of said suspenders or shoulder-straps being secured to the belt near its upper edge and free at the lower edge, the tabs or portions below the fastening to the belt being adapted to pass through openings in a shirt-waist or the like, and fastening devices on said extended ends, substantially as specified.
2. In a device for the purpose descfibed a belt, suspenders or shoulder-straps attached to the belt, the rear ends of the suspenders or shoulder-straps being loose tabs extended a short distance below the belt so as to pass through openings in a shirt-waist or the like, fastening devices onsaid tabs for engaging fastening devices on a skirt and whereby a skirt when supported, will prevent a withdrawal of the tabs from the openings in the waist, and skirt-lifting straps secured to the belt and having fastening devices, substantially as specified.
