JACOB ADLER, OF COLOGNE, GERMANY.
COMBINED BELT AND SUSPENDER.
SPECIFICATION formi-ng part of Letters Patent No. 340,185, dated April 20. 1886.
Application filed August 3, 1885. Serial No. 173,371. (No model.) Iatented in Germany April 21, 1885, No. 33,256; in Belgium April 21, 1885, No. 68,589; in France April 25, 1885, No. 168,500 in Austria-Hungary June 27, 1885, No. 23,977 and No. 571,341 in England July 24, 1885, No. 8,932; in Luxemburg December 9, 1885, No. (lf2-2; in Italy December 9, 1885, and in Spain December D, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB ADLER, inerchant, of Cologne, Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Belt and Suspender Combined, of'which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to prevent any one who wears Suspenders, more especially boys or young men, from having a round back, which frequently happens with the use of every kind of Suspenders; and it consists in means for holding pants, while allowing of every facility of motion to the upper part of the body.
In all existing belts the tightening-of the same causes the pants to form creases, and are thereby painful to the body, and they let the back portion of the pants down when stooping, and the pants must be raised again when the body rises. lith my improved belt the pants are brought back automatically to their former position when stooping, and they do .not giverise to creases or corporal inconvenienees.
Figure 1 is a view of the belt laid out flat. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are two similar perspective views of the belt with certain parts in different positions.
The belt is worn over the shirt and within or inside the pants.
A is a beltsay two inches wide-niade of any suitable strong fabric and buckled in front. At the under side of the buckle d is provided a bearing plate or device (not shown) to avoid any painful pressure of the buckle against the body.
Toward the back portion of the belt A is a 4strong india-rubber or elastic band, B, its
length being about equal to the distance apart between the points at which the ordinary buckle audits accessories are sewed onto the pants. The belt A lies flat upon the band B,
and at one end it is sewed or otherwise fastened thereto, while it is buckled at the other end, as shown.
i' r are two rings, ofA any suitable fabric, slipped onto the band B at a distance apart of about one-third the length 'of the said baud. The function of the said rings i' r is to aid in holding the rear part of the pants to the belt.
The fastening of the beltl to the pants in front is effected by means of a number of buttons, k, screwed onto a pin, c, secured to a metal plate, j', the latter being sewed or otherwise adapted to the belt A. After removing the button k the pointed pin cis driven through the cloth of the pants, after which the button is screwed in place again.
f/ is a little chain, secured to the plate f at one end and to a ring on the button k at the other, for the purpose of preventing the loss of the said button.
The fastening of the belt A to the rear of the pants is or may be effected in a similar manner by means of pins c and buttons on the band B, their position being shown by the letters c and By the herein-described arrangement of belt the rear portion of the pants carries along with it, when the wearer stoops, the elastic band B, and the pants are automatically brought back to their original position when the wearer rises by means of the said band.
It will be readily conceived that the hereindescribed arrangement of belt is very easy and comfortable for the wearer, that it simply requires to be buckled in front, and that it avoids the troublesome buttoning of ordinary suspenders'to the pants.
I claim- The hereinbeforedescribed device for holding or suspending pants, composed of a belt, A, buckled in front and provided at its rear, for the purpose of supporting the back portion of pants, with an elastic band, B, which is sewed at one end to the belt and provided at the other with the buckle and the intermediate rings, l' r, the said device having buttons for supporting the front as well as the back portions ofthe pants, substantially as described and shown.
In 'testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB ADLER.
