UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HERMAN PEITER, OF NORVALK, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED SHIRT AND SUSPENDRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,376, dated December 23, 1890. Application tiled August 14, 1890 Serial No. 362,019. (No modele To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known thatl, HERMAN PEI'IER, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved device for the support of trousers, and has for its objects to provide an invisible means for retaining in position trousers, aifording comfort iu use, and avoiding the unsightly appearance incidental to the wearing of the ordinary Suspenders.
To these ends my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafterset forth, and indicated in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar lett-ers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of one of the duplicate supporting devices in position upon the inner surface of a shirt to whichitis secured, the suspender being connected to the upper portion of the trousers. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation, showing the other supporting device in position engaging the inner surface of the shirt and connected removably to the trousers; and Fig. 3 is a front view of a shirt having one sleeve removed and both of the trouser-suspending appliances secured thereon.
Two similar devices are employed as trousers-supports. consist, essentially, of an endless band A, which is made of any suitable flexible material, preferably of a fibrous nature. The bands A are of a proper relative length to encompass the shoulders of the wearer and hang pendent therefrom a short distance below the sleeves. A proportionate width is given to the duplicate bands mentioned to provide strength therefor and distribute the weight they sustain over a proper area, and, as represented, each band is located upon the inner surface of the shoulder-piece of a shirt A at a point about central between the neckband of the shirt and the junction of the sleeve with the latter and are thereto secured by sewing their edges fast to the shirt mate- These novel Suspenders each 'rial over the shoulders, so as to leave loose bights below the sleeves.
Directly below the center of the armholes in the shirt a transverse slit c is made in the shirt. material on each side, which apertures are of suitable length and are properly iinished to give them a neat appearance and strengthen the terminal ends of the slits. The slits c are at such points belowr the bights of the looped bands A that the short suspender-bands .B will when connected to these pendent looped bands project through the slits cfor au engagement with the lower garment C, while the bands A remain invisible. As shown, the depending suspender straps or bands B are attached to the bights of the looped bands A removably. Preferably abutton ct and mating button-hole are used to connect each suspender-band, as shown.
. The suspender-bands B may be made of any suitable material, elastic or otherwise, and each is provided with any approved means for adjusting their length. Preferablythe usual button-straps D and buckles D are utilized for the adjustable connection of the suspender-bands with opposite buttons on the trousers C. The adjustable connection of the suspender-bands B to buttons cl', which are located on the trousers C at opposite points above the hips of the wearer, affords ample support for the lower garment, while freedom of action and the uncomfortable binding strain of the ordinary crossed Suspenders is obviated.
Having thus fullydescribedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a shirt having a lateral slit formed below each arlnhole, of two endless bands which are secured to the shoulder portions of the shirt around .the armholes on the interior surface of the shirt, pendent suspender pieces or bands extended through the slits in the shirt and secured to the bights of the endless bands, and buttonstraps adjustable on the suspender-bands, substantially as set forth.
HERMAN -PEITER.
