I BUGKLE. I No. 245,918. Patented Aug. 16,1881..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCUS DATTLEBAUM, OF VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,918, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed July 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MARCUS DATTLEBAUM, of Virginia City, in the county of Storey and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompauyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken throughline 0000, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 illustrates the application of my improved buckle to a garment.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of buckles that are used upon vests, pan taloons, and other articles of wearing-apparel for the purpose of taking up the fullness and adjusting the fit of the garment; and it consists in the improvement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The frame of my improved buckle is composed of two parallel side bars, A A, and two end bars, B B, which are bent flat, so as to lie in a horizontal plane at right:- angles to the vertical plane of the side bars, A A, as will be seen more clearly by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. The end bars, B B, have inwardly-projecting points or teeth I) b, and the frame A B is divided into two halves by a central cross-bar, O, which is inserted with its ends into the side pieces, A A.
D D are the tongue-bars, which consist of flat strips of metal cut in one piece with their respective tongues E E E E, with their ends rounded to fit into pivot-holes in the side bars,
(No model.)
so that when inserted into their proper position in the frame, one on eachside of the middle bar, C, the points oftheirtriangular tongues will play upon the upper sides or faces of the end bars, B B, in opposite directions, as clearly seen in the drawings.
This buckle is attached to the straps of the garment upon which it is to be used without stitching, and permits ot' the adjustment of both the tightening-straps to an equal degree or extent, which avoids bunehiuess of the garment, as is the case where the buckle is stitched to the end of one of the straps which cannot be shortened, while the tightening or fitting of the garment is effected by shortening the opposite strap only. The teeth I) b serve as additional fastenings, and are bent inward so.
as to catch in the fabric of the garment without interfering with the adjustment of the straps.
Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A buckle consisting of ar. ctangular frame provided with single central teeth, b, a middle crossbar, U, and two tongue-bars, D D, provided with teeth E E on each side of the central teeth, I), and equidistant from said teeth and the side bars, A, the points of the teeth E, E, and b being turned in opposite directions, so that the cloth is drawn evenly in opposite directions, thus preventing tearing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARCUS DATTLEBAUM.
