Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALENTINE M. BEAMEB, OF XENIA, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-BUCKLES.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,478, dated August 27, 1878; application filed January 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE M. BEAM- ER, of Xenia, in the county of Miami, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness- Bnekles and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my buckle attached to a strap. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the buckle only.
My invention relates to buckles designed for use in harness-straps chiefly; and it consists in the novel construction, hereinafter described, of a rectangular frame, to one bar of which. is attached a short, curved, and rigid tongue, and which'bar is also recessed, substantially as described, and set forth in the claim.
The letters A, B, O, and D of the drawings represent four bars, united in a rectangular form, which constitute the frame of my buckle. The bar Ais flattened and recessed, as shown at E on Fig. 3, in such manner as to form shoulders (I (I, one on each end of said recess. This recess and these shoulders I consider the important features of my invention. This bar A is also provided with the short, curved, and rigid tongue G, which extends across the area about two-thirds of the distance from bar A to B, and is curved first upward from bar A, then downward, and again upward, as shown on said figure.
The entire buckle is piece.
The recess, with its shoulders d d, is designed to hold a strap in position on nearly the same plane as the lower side of bar 13, and as the point of the tongue G is bent downward, so as to rest on the strap and clamp it firmly against the lower side of said bar B, the effect is that the strap is held securely, while the tongue-point is out of the way of the animals tail or other movable object.
It is apparent that by the use of my buckle no sewing or tacking of the strap thereon is required.
It is also apparent that said buckle is adapted for use with all straps that a-ppertain to reins, lines, hitch-straps, stirrup-leathers, buggy-stays, and other like devices; that it is at once cheap, safe, and permanent.
I claim as my invention The buckle herein described, having the bars A, B, O, and D, recess E, shoulders (I d. and tongue G, constructed substantially as specified.
preferably cast in one 1n testimony that I claim the foregoing I
