BUCKLE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,882, dated June 14, 1881.

Application filed April 21, 1881.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. CHAPMAN, of Glymont, in the county of Charles and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Buckle Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to facilitate the attaching of buckles to straps.

The invention consists in a U-shapedframe with a loop at the end for receiving the central or end transverse piece of the buckle that is to be held to the strap, the strap being passed longitudinally intoor through the U-shaped frame, which is secured to the strap by means of rivets or by means ofa swinging tongue pivoted on the frame and passing through a suitable aperture in the strap.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device for attaching buckles to straps. Fig. 2 is a pen spective view of a modification of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a buckle attached to a strap by means of my improved device for attaehin g buckles to straps.

The U-shaped frame A is provided at the inner end with loops B, rising above the level of the upper shanks, (J, and thelower shanks, D, are connected by a transverse rod, E, on which a swinging tongue,F, isloosely mounted, this tongue being of such length that it can rest against the transverse end part, G, of the upper shanks, O, which end part, G, may be provided with a recess or notch, H, for the end of this swinging tongue F.

If desired, the upper and lower shanks of the U-shaped frames may be made as plates 0 and D, provided with rivet-holes J and a longitudinal slot, 1t, through which the tongue of the buckle passes when the buckle is attached.

(Model) 5 a buckle, K, is to be secured to the end of a strap, L, the transverse rod M, on which the swinging tongue N of the buckle is loosely mounted, is passed through the frame A into the loops B, so that the buckle can swing in these loops. The end of the strap is passed in between the shanks of the frame, which is sooured to the same by rivets or by means of the tongue F, which is passed through an apeiture, O, of the strap L, and through acorrespondin g aperture, P, in a strap, Q, passed longitudinally through the frame A and below the strap L, as shown in Fig. 5. The swing ing tongue F rests against the end Gr of the frame, and thus receivesboth the straps L and Q in the frame. The frame A can be attached to the strap in any desired manner, but 1 prefer to attach' it by means of the swinging tongue F, as this is the most simple and convenient method.

The buckle can be attached very firmly without sewing; can easily be reattached in case the strap breaks. An entire harness can be completed very rapidly with my improved device, as sewing can be almost entirely dispensed with.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- A device for attaching buckles t0 straps, composed of the U-shaped frame A, with the transverse bar E, and ot' the swinging tongue F, loosely mounted thereon, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
