SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,074, dated July 19, 1892.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HYMAN LIEBERTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, Bay county, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a back view. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, showing the bar closed. Fig. et is a back view showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a central vert-ical section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a front view.

My invention relates to suspender-buckles5 and its object is to provide a new and irnproved buckle for use on Suspenders. I accomplish this object as hereinafter specified and as illustrated in the drawings.

That which I regard as new will be pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, a indicates a leather piece, which supports the various parts of the buckle. The piece a is preferably of the shape shown in the drawings; but it may be of any other suitable shape. Extending across the upper portion of the back of the piece a is a strap b, which is secured at its opposite ends to the piece a, as shown in Fig. l, thereby forming a slot through which the web c of the suspender may pass. i p

d indicates a button secured upon the lower end of the piece a, which button serves to receive the upper end of the usual straps e, as shown, the upper end of the straps being buttonholed for that purpose.

f indicates a metallic plate, preferably some- .what triangular in shape, as shown in Fig. l, the lowery portion of which plate is secured upon the piece a by means of an eyelet g or in any other suitable manner. The plate f is provided with downwardly-projecting teeth 2, which project outward from the piece a, as best shown in Fig. 2, and are adapted to engage the web as it is pulled upward, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

j indicates a cross-bar, which at one end is hinged to the plate f on a line with the teeth c', as best shown in Fig. l.

7c indicates a catch adapted to receive and hold the end of the bar j when it is folded across the plate f, as best shown in Fig. 4. The bar j is so mounted upon the plate f that when it is secured in position across the plate, as above described, a slight space will be left between it and the teeth c', as best shown in Fig. 2.

In securing the buckle upon the web of a suspender the web is passed down between the strap b and the piece a, thence downward over the teeth c', the cross-bar j being turned back to the position shown in Fig. l to permit of such adjustment. After the web has been moved downward to the proper point the bar j is folded over across the plate f and its end is caught by the catch 7c. The web will thereby be pressed against the teeth i and movement of the web will be prevented. By this construction in order to adj ust the length of the Suspenders it is necessary to release the bar j from the catch lo.

In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modification of the above construction which is substantially the same as far as regards the operation of the buckle. The means for attaching the straps, however, are slightly different.

In the modification the piece a is provided near its lower end with a slot l, adapted to receive the lower portion of the plate f, which is formed with a tongue f', as best shown in Fig. 4. The tongue f passes downward through the slot Z to the front of the piece a and is provided with a button d to receive the straps. By this construction the downward pull upon the straps serves to pull the plate f more or less downward, and thereby causes the teeth rl to engage the web more firmly. The construction first described, however, is that which I prefer to use.

That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.
