SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,021, dated October 17, 1893. Application filed August 10, 1893. Serial No. 482,848- (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GODFREY MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable .others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in horse collar fastenings or looks; and it consists in providing a locking lever or cam which is adapted to engage with a loop, the loop having a tang which will hold the same rigid with respect to the strap by which it is attached to the collar and prevent an undue amount of strain thereon; the lever being also adapted to engage with the cross-bar of a buckle attached to the other part of the collar.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a horse collar lock or hame fastener constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification which is especially adapted as a horse collar look.

A designates a buckle which is provided with curved side pieces aahaving upwardly extended end sections a a, said side pieces being connected by cross-bars a a a and a In practice the cross-bars a and a are on a line with each other, while the cross-bar a is a little higher being at the center of the curved side pieces. The cross-bar a is a sufficient distance above the crossbar a to permit a strap to be passed between them while the cross-bar a has a tongue, at, with which the perforations or holes in the strap engage. The strap, one end of which is secured to the hame or collar is passed beneath the crossbars a and a so as to lie above the cross-bar a the tongue a being caused to engage with the desired perforation, the free end being then passed under the cross-bar a so that said cross-bar serves as a keeper. The end cross-bar a is curved downwardly so that the strain on the buckle from the lever will come adjacent to the side pieces of the buckle. When a double strap or a pair of straps is used the form of buckle or loop is substantially duplicated, the cross-bar a carrying the rigid tongue and the cross-bars a and a being retained and two of such buckles connected to each other by a cross-bar a and a forwardly extending loop or bar a with which the lever engages.

B designates the cam lever which is constructed substantially as shown in Patent No. 299,481, dated May 27, 1884, the loop 0 being provided with a tang c which projects from the cross-bar of the loop and is formed integral therewith. In attaching the strap to the loop it may be rigidly secured by rivets or. by sewing, and the tang lying between the members of the loop portion of the strap holds the loop in a rigid manner so that the lever can be more readily guided into the buckle or loop carried by the opposite strap.

The parts of the lock or fastening hereinbefore described are preferably made of malleable iron.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a hame or collar having a combined buckle and loop attached to one of the ends of the same, a loop carrying a cam-lever and attached to the other end of the hame or collar, and a tang or projection c on the end of the loop farthest from the pivotal point of the cam-lever, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a hame or collar fastener, the combination, of a loop or buckle having a central cross-bar with a rigid tongue, cross-bars between Which the looped or doubled part of the strap passes and an end crossbar with which a cam-lever is adapted to engage, together with a loop having an upwardly curved portion to which the cam-lever is pivoted, the rear cross-bar of said loop having a projecting tang which lies between the looped portion of the strap used for attaching the loop to the hame or collar, substantially as shown.
