UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MILLER HARPER, OF FAIRFIELD, IOWA.
STRAP-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,809, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed July 1, 1890. Serial No. 357,445. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MILLER HARPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole or Collar Strap Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in detachable fastenin gs for pole or collar straps; and the object of my invention is to provide a coupling for the same, whereby the pole or collar strap can be readily and quickly attached to or detached from the horse-collar without buckling or unbuckling said pole or collar strap.
To this end my invention chiefly consists in forming a buckle with a metal couplingplate which couples and interlocks with a like plate secured to the other end of the strap, whereby said end may be readily fastened to or released from the buckle without buckling or unbuckling the strap.
My invention also consists in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing the position for coupling the pole or collar strap. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing said strap coupled. Fig. 3 is aperspective showing in detail a rear view of the coupling-plates. and Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the formation of the loop for the neck- *oke in the pole or collarstrap and the manner of securing the same to the lower coupling-plate.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes a buckle framed in a metal plate B, said plate being perforated to receive and hold the tongue. I) is a channel or slot cut lengthwise in said plate. The under side of said plate is provided with a lip b, bent at right angles and projecting downwardly, as shown in Fig. 3.
O is a metal plate having a T-shaped stud or key 0, the head of said stud projecting crosswise over said plate. 0 is a recess out in the side of said plate. 0 is a rivet secured O and doubled and secured by rivets r 1' to form a loop L for the neck- 'oke.
O and riveted or otherwise secured to the stud e, as sho n in Fig. at. Theloop for the neckyoke and the collar or pole strap are all in one piece, the collar or pole strap being adjusted by the buckle A to the proper length.
My coupling is designed to release or fasten said strap without unbuckling the buckle. To fasten or couple the pole or collar strap to the neck-yoke, it is only necessary to insert the T-shaped stud 0 through the slot 1). This is done by turning the plate B, as shown in Fig. 1, until the slot 1) registers with the T- shaped stud and the lip b registers with the recess cut in the side of said plate 0. Then by turning the plate B up the coupling is effected, as shown in Fig. 2. To release the coupling, the plate B is turned in the opposite direction.
Having shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A strap-coupling consisting of two metal plates B and O, the plate 13 having a buckle framed in one end and provided with a slot 1) and the plate 0 having a T-shaped stud to register with said slot, and a slot (3 cut in its lower end, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pole or collar strap coupling consist ing of two metal plates B and C, the plate B having a buckle-frame at one end and having the slot 19 and a lip b secured to its under side, said plate 0 being secured'to the The other. end is passed through the loop under the plate strap and having a recess cut in one 'side, a
