NITED STATES PATENT Prion.
lllOSES W. BEDDING, OF HIGHGATE,,VERMONTL BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,520, dated July 8, 1884.
Application filed May 7, 1884.
buckles, and especially of that class adapted to secure the trace or tug-strap of a harness to the breast-strap, or to the part of the tug attached to the hame; and the object is to provide a device of thekind and for the purpose stated which will permit the connected parts of the harness to be readily and easily' adjusted, and at the same'time hold the parts securel y together.
My invention, therefore, consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully describechand specifically pointed out in the claims. 4
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have fully illustrated my improvements, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the parts, and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view showing the device applied to connect the tug and breast strap of a harness.
The letter A represents the box or sleeve through which the trace slides. This box or sleeve is formed with the link extension c, to receive the breaststrap or hame tug, and is provided with the forward perforations, I), extending through both sides of the box, to receive and retain the lug or pin of the-spring, and also has the rear perforation, 0, which may be screw-t-hreaded, to receive the fastening screw or rivet of the spring. This part of the device may be made of any suitable metal, either cast or struck out and soldered together. Malleable iron, because of its strenth, and being susceptible of ready ornamentation, either by design or by coating, is specially adapted for the purpose. In some instances it is preferable to form the face of the sleeve with a broad groove,
41, in which the spring fits, as thereby side displacement of the spring is prevented.
The letter B represents the spring, provided with the pin or lug e, fitted to the forward (No model.)
perforations in the sleeve, and secured in place to the sleeve by the screw or rivet f. The end of the breast-strap or of the harnetug is secured in the link-extension of the device'in any of the well-known ways, and then the free end of the trace or tug is passed into the sleeve, the spring being lifted so that the pin or lug is withdrawn from the sleeve to admit its passage, and when the adjustment desired is reached the spring is released, and by its own force drives the pin through a hole in the trace, and thus the tug is held securely in connection.
It will be seen that by the use of my device the annoyances and diiiiculties attending the attaching, detaching, and adjusting of heavy straps are entirely overcome. The strap is not torn, broken, or kinked, as in a buckle of the usual'kind, but is kept straight, and when the pin is Withdrawn from the sleeve the tug may be detached or adjusted at pleasure and with perfect ease. The strain on the tug being straight, it is not liable to fracture by wearing away at the point of rest, as in the ordinary buckle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved buckle herein described, consisting of the box or sleeve A, having a link-extension, a, and perforations b, and the spring B, having one end rigidly secured to the sleeve and the other end provided with a lug 01' pin, substantially as and for the purpose set' forth.
Y 2. The improved buckle herein described, consisting of the box or sleeve A, formed with a groove, (1, and link-extension a, and perforations Z), and the spring B, fitted to the groove 9, and having one end rigidly secured to the sleeve and the other end provided with a lug or pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
MOSES W BEDDING.
