Description

J. REED BUCKLE.
WI YI/V'E S SE S 114: mama PETERS ca, Pum'wu-rnu, vusm Patented Oct. 28, 1890.
NGTuN flttorney of UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAY REED, OF FREEMAN, MISSOURI.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 439,254, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed February 24, 1890. Serial No. 3 1,490. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AY REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeman, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improve merits in Buckles, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View showing the top side of the buckle with the strap attached. Fig. 2is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite side. Fig. 4: is the same view with a strap attached.
My present invention, relates to a new and useful improvement in harness-buckles; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter explained, and specifically pointed in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which I carry the same out.
In the drawings, A represents the body of a buckle, provided with the'tongue B. Thistongue is formed of a single piece of wire or metal, one end of which is bent around one loosely secured around the body at cl, thus forming not only a loop for holding down the end of the harness-strap, but also a lever for raising up the tongueby a simple pressure of the thumb when it is desired to unbuckle the strap. It is evident thatby this construction I save the expense of the usual leather loop on harness. Again, it is evidentthat bythus forming thetongue of the buckle so that the strap D will pass and fit between the coils I avoid the necessity of punching or cutting the strap to allowa passage for the tongue to pass through, as in the case of the ordinary buckle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a buckle, the combination, with the body portion, of a combined tongue and lever formed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is coiled upon the rear cross-bar of the body portion and carried across and above said cross-bar to form a lever, and also a loop for the strap, and thence coiled around the cross-bar at that end and curved inward and forward and back upon itself to the cross-bar" to form the tongue proper, substantially as herein described.
2. In a buckle, the combination, with the body portion, of a wire tongue whose opposite sides are pivotally mounted upon the opposite ends of the cross-bar of the body portion and thence converge toward the front of said body portion, said wire having one of its ends carried upward and above the crossbar to form a loop, which also serves as a lever for raising the front of the tongue, substantially as herein described.
JAY REED.
