TRACE BUCKLE.
APPLICATION rn-nn 001224, 1906.
, WITNESSES;
INVENTOR- HENRY JOH NSON ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Oct. 30, 1906.
Application filed October 24,1905. Serial No. 284,190.
To a whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, HENRY JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgerton, in the county of Platte and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Imrovement in Trace-Buckles, of which the ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in trace-buckles, and has for its object to produce an attachment for a trace-buckle which shall permit the ready fastening, release, or adjustment of straps and bands, and particularly of heavy articles of this nature, such as traces or tugs of harness, and one which shall form an additional fastening to the single-tongued buckle in common use.
To these ends my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improvement as in use. Fig. 2 is a central horizontal'section of same. Fig. 3 is a view showing application of my improvement to an ordinary trace-buckle. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the parts of the buckle separated. fOlllTl of frame to be used in connection with a bai The buckle consists, essentially, of three arts A, B, and O, the part A consisting of a rame (1, provided with two vcross-bars b b in the same plane and two cross-bars c and c, elevated or thrown out of line with the body of the frame a distance equal, orv approximately so, to the thickness of the strap or trace D with which it is used. The frame is further provided with the usual eyes or loops d and e at the top and bottom and the additional loop f at its rear end and the rigid stud or tongue g, which asses through a trace or stra of a common uckle.
T e part B or bail is of the ordinary construction in common use, the cross-bar b be ing secured to the hame-tug, as is usual in this class of buckles.
C represents a flat piece of metal which constitutes the principal part of my invention, said plate having a curved portionc at one end and a rigid stud or tongue 0 projecting perpendicularly from its inner face. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the curved portion fits over the bar 0 in front of first loop, the straight portion extending under the ar 0 Fig. 5 is a View of a modified and the extra loop f and rearwardly a short distance.
In using a trace-buckle provided-with my.
trace-holes; then push trace through loop B,
and the attachment holds the trace firmly and forces the rigid tongue 9 into lace, and the end of the trace can then e forced through loop k, and the trace will thus be prevented from slipping back.
As shown in Fig. 3, I may attach my plate 0 to the ordinary trace-buckle in common use known as the Champion, thus rendering said buckle a double-tongue buckle.
It will be apparent that by providing two tongues the trace will be more securely held and that the buckle is greatly strength-. encd, as the strain which falls on the tongue is greatly lessened by part of such strain beirlilg taken by the additional tongue or stud of t e trace will be lengthened, as it is well known plate 0. Furthermore, the life of the that in buckles using a single stud or tongue the trace generally wears out or breaks at the point where the tongue is inserted. By the use of two studs or tongues this strain is more evenly distributed, so that much greater pulling power may be put onthe traces and buckles without the tongues breaking or the holes of the trace pulling out and the trace breaking.
As shown in Fig. 5, I may provide the frame A with two rigid tongues a a the tongue (1 projecting outwardly from the front end of frame and the tongue a projecting from the inner face of the plate near its rear end. The loop f is to attach the breeching to. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a harness-buckle comprising a bail and a tongue-bearing frame, aving a loop at its rear end, of a plate having a curved front end and a rear flat extension, said extension passing under the aforesaid loop and having a tongue projecting from the inner facethereof.
