HAM E-STRAP ATTACH MENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,675, dated October 2-6, 1880. Application filed August 3, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hallie-Strap Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of buckles which are shown in Patents Nos. 214,315 and 220,862, its objects being to save the expense of stitching on buckles and loops, to prevent hame-strap buckles from slipping while straps are being tightened, to economize leather by enabling the use of shorter hame-straps than heretofore, and to simplify hame-strap attachments by combining in one article the strapbuckle and hame-hook.

It consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter specified.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hame-strap attachment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view of my improved attachment as in use. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section of the attachment and strap.

The letter A designates the improved hamestrap attachment, which, as an entirety, consists in a buckle, hame-hook, and strap-confining loops, all formed preferably by casting in one piece of metal, except the buckle-tongue, which is attached in the usual manner.

The side bars, B B, are preferably curved, as shown, and are connected by the front end bar, 0, which is the front bar of the buckle; by the tongue-bar D, to which the tongue E is pivoted; by the flatiniddle bar, F, provided with a hole, f, to which the end of the hemestrap is to be riveted; by the loop-bar G, under which the free end of the strap passes, and which serves as a confining-loop; and by the rear end bar, H, from which projects forward the hook I on the under side of the frame. The strap K has its end inserted between the side bars under the tongue-bar D, and across the flat middle bar, F, to which it is firmly riveted, thus obviating stitching.

The end bar, H, might be dispensed with, and the ends of the side bars be simply joined and bent under to form the hook.

Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, illustrating the mode of applying the invention to use, the hook I is engaged with one of the hame-loops, and the free end of the strap is passed from the inside through the other hame-loop, then back behind the front bar, between the side bars, and in front of bar D, and one of its tongue-holes engaged with tongue E, the tip of the strap being then passed behind the loop G, which holds it up snugly out of the way.

I am aware that prior to my invention a hame-strap has been provided with an attached hame-hook, which prevents the strap from slipping and the buckle from shifting while the strap is being tightened, said hook being also provided with a loop, serving as a confining-loop for the free end of thestrap; but this hook and loop, though cast in one piece, are separate from the buckle, which, for its attachment, requires the formation of a loop in the strap, and the strap must be passed through both hame-loops.

By my invention I greatly economize in the use of leather by obviating the formation of a loop for the attachment of the buckle, and by rendering unnecessary the passage of the strap through both hame-loops, thus enabling the use of a strap about six inches shorter than those heretofore used, which is a considerable item of saving, as will be readily appreciated.

Besides the saving in leather, the construction of my attachment as a single article, incapable of separation, and'havlng the manifold functions described, renders it very convenient and cheap in manufacture and application.

What I claim is The herein-described improved hame-strap attachment, consisting of the curved side bars, B B, the end bar, 0, upon which the buckletongue rests, the cross-bar D, arranged next in order to the said end bar between the side bars, B B, and carrying the tongue E, the cross-bar F, formed with a hole, f, and arranged next in order to the bar D, the crossbar G, arranged next in order to the bar I and finally the end bar, H, with the inwardlybent hook I, all arranged as shown and specitied.
