BUCKLE ATTACHMENT FOR STRAPS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,311, dated February 28, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LA FAYETTE HARTSON, of Wyoming, in the county ofJoues and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Buckle Attachment for Straps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists principally of a metal plate or clip, perforated, slotted, and bent so as to hold the buckle, and adapted to be riveted to the end of a leather or other strap, the clip being provided with suitable loop or loops for retaining the strap. The clip may also be formedwith a hook at one end for engagement with a ring, staple, or similar attachment for protecting the strap, which also constitutes a feature of my invention.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a strap and buckle secured together with my improved buckle attachment. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line or a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the buckle and buckle attachment, showing a modification; and Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view showing the manner of using the hook.

A represents the metal buckle attachment or clip. B represents the buckle, which is of ordinary construction, and 0 represents the strap of leather or other material, to one end of which the buckle is attached by means of the clip and the rivets i z.

The clip is formed of a metal plate ofsuitablelength and width to suit, the size of buckle and width of strap with which itis to be used, and is folded upon itself, so as to embrace the end of the strap and to receive and hold the bar d of the buckle in the fold of the plate, the plate being slotted, as shown at e, for. the passage of (ModeL) ed to hook into the ring 1 or other similar attachment, as shown in Fig. 5, for protecting the strap from unnecessary wear and contact with the ring, and for preventing the strap being folded in a sharp angle, and by that means cracked and weakened. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the clip is formed with but one loop, a, for holding the free end of the strap coming from the buckle.

The clip may be made of any kind of metal and of any size, so that any common buckle can be attached to any strap by it.

It will be seen that by the use of this clip a saving in leather results, as the strap does not have to be lapped back and stitched, as in the old way of securing buckles, and that much labor and time in attaching the buckles are saved, as no sewingis required, the end of the strap being simply punched and placed in the clip and the rivets inserted and headed, which completes the attachment of the buckle.

It will also be seen that the strap is not weakened to any material extent, as in the old way of attachment, as'it is not necessary to make a long incision in the strap for the passage of the tongue of the buckle, thus greatly hook should be used; but where the use of v the strap is such that it is not necessary to double or fold back the strap the clip with one loop should be used, the loop serving the same purpose and used in the same manner as the ordinary leather loop is used.

In using the clip with the two loops the hookf is first placed in the ring or other attachment, as shown in Fig. 5, then the strap is passed throughthe ring over the outside and rounded end. of the clip, through the loop I), thence through the ring, staple, loop, or other attachment of the hame, neck-yoke, thill, or other object to be held by the strap, thence through the buckle, and finally through the loop a, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
