` A. J. STEWART.
BUGKLB-- No. 360,827. Paented Apr.- 5, 1887-.-
Y NA Prrsns mmmmmnpw, wamngm D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. J UDSON STEWART, OF CHILLICOTHE, MISSOURI.'
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,827, dated April 5, 1887.
Application filed November 16, 1886. Serial No. 219,051.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. JUDsoN STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Livingston, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in buckles; and it has for its objects to provide a buckle that is' simple in construction, easy to manipulate, and at the Sametime a strong and secure device. These objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3, a perspective view in detail.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a plate stamped fromsuitable metal, and afterward having the end a turned down, as indicated, the opposite end being turned up,as seen plainly in the drawings atb. The sides are provided with lugs m m, being part of the lips zz',which are turned down as the end a. The line or strap to which this part of the buckle is attached is inserted on the under side, the end extending not quite to the end or hook a, and secured by rivets or otherwise through the aperture S. The lugs m are now bentto clasp the strap or line, holding it securely in place. The end b, turned up as a hook, is for the purpose of securing a metal wearing-surface for the object to which the strap or lineis secured. l
Sliding loosely upon the line or strap is a loop, C, formed of metal or leather, havingits ends bent at right angles, and having asmall bar or rod, D, secured between said bent ends. The advantages of my invention will be seen (No model.)
plainly from the description hereinafter written. v
Supposing the ring E to be one of the rings at the side of an ordinary bridle-bit, and the line or strap an ordinary rein to be attached thereto, the buckle is secured to the end of the rein, as described, and passed through the ring,
the hook or bent end a passing under the rod or bar D. On the clasp the rein is secured to the ring by pulling or tightening the rein. The
hook b will clasp the ring, thereby forming a metal wearing-surface,which, if not there,wi1l in a short time wear the strap or line in two.
I do not limit myself to the use of the buckles to reins alone, but to any line of which the end is to be secured to an object, as stated.
Instead of the lugs t' i the lips can be serrated, as shown, and the points turned onto the strap, thereby doing away with rivets to hold the strap securely.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A buckle consisting of a plate of metal having one end bent to form a hook, the sides bent and providedwith lugs or serrated, and a central aperture in said plate to secure it to aline or strap, and a clasp or loop, as set forth.
2. A buckle consisting of a plate bent to form a hook at each end, the sides being bent and provided with lugs or serrated edges, and a loop or clasp, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
vIn testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. J UDSON S'IEVART.
