MORGAN E. LASHER, OF OHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS.
HAM=TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,743, dated March 13, 1883.
Application lcd January 8, 1883. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORGAN E. LAsHER, of Champaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Tugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form partof this speciticatiomin which- Figure lis aface view of myimproved hametug and trace attachment. Fig.2 is a sectional View of Fig. l, taken in the plane indicated by the dotted line on this gure. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the clips of Figs. l, 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View, showing a modification of one ofthe clips.
This invention relates to means for fastening traces to hame-tugs, whereby an adjustment can be made for horses of different sizes; and the nature of my invention consists in a novel clip attachment when a leather tug and trace are employed, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
The letter A designates a section ot' a trace, on the end of which 1s applied a metallic plate, B, the shank Bof which is riveted tothe trace, as shown in the drawings. The plate B is constructed with a hooked lockinglug, a, on one side, a transverse lip, b. on the opposite side, and bifurcations c c. Between the bifurcations c c is pivoted, at d, a lever, O, which is constructed with'a curved locking-tongue, e, and also with a curved handle-piece. This lever O is so pivoted between the parts c c that one arm of it will bear against the hame-tug D when the parts are secured together, thereby preventing a casual detachment thereof. The tug D is made of leather, and it has a loop or staple, E, secured to one end of it for attaching the tug to a haine. One prong of the staple E is inserted into the end of the tug D, and it is such a length that it extends within the clasping portion of a clip, G, as shown in Fig. 2. This prong of the staple is secured to the tug by means of rivets. By these means the clip Gr serves to prevent the leather tug from breaking at the point where the said prong terminates.
G G designate clips, which are made of metal and constructed with clasping-barsff, which embrace the tug D. These clips are also constructed with rectangular openings g through their faces, adapted to receive the hooked locking-lug a. The clips G, as well as the clips G', are compressed on the leather tug-strap, and these clips are so made that they are applicable to new and old hame-tugs.
The moditication which I show in Fig. 4 shows the cross-bar disconnected. The object of this is to enable me to adapt my improved clip to old harness-tugs. This kind of a clip is riveted to the tug precisely like the clip wherein the clasping-bars are connected. At the rear end of the tug is applied, by means of my improved clasps, the buckle L, through which the belly-band,thetrace,andotherstraps about a harness are connected.
It will be seen from the above description that I use a leather or iiexible strap, and that I apply to this strap perforated clips, which may be arranged at any desired distance apart.
I am aware that prior to the invention herein claimed hame-tug straps have been connected to traces by locking` devices which admitted of adjustment lengthwise. I am also aware that metal plates have been used, in coinbination with trace-fasteners, wherein each plate is ot one piece ot' metal. None of this do I cla-im.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a iexihlc tug, the independent clips riveted thereto, and the loop E, having one tang extended within the embracing portion of one of the clips, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. In a iiexible haine-tug, the combination of independentclips havingopenings g through them, and clasping-barsj', all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
3. The combination, with a haine-tug having independent perforated clips, of a trace, A,I the plate B, the locking-lug a, the lip b, bifurcations c c, lever O, the locking-tongue on this lever, and a forward extension, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORGAN E. LASHER.
