0. 1:. WARD. BAGIT BAND ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS- No. 413,117. Patented 001. 15, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. WARD, OF REWEY, WISCONSIN.
BACK-BAND ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 413,117, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed May 31, 1889. Serial No. 312,743. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rewey, in the county of Iowa and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Back-Band Attachment for Harnesses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to a back-band attachment for harnesses, and among the objects in View are to provide a back-band and provide the same with a ring to which may be connected the usual back-strap, which back-strap is provided with a oheckrein-hook, whereby'the restlessness of a horse will not tend to chafe the back, all as will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a back-band constructed in accordance with my invention and having the attachments above enumerated. Fig.2 is a side elevation showing the relative position of the ring, hook, and back-strap.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I prefer to construct the back-band of one single layer of leather 1, the ends of which are provided with ordinary strap-loops 2, adjustable in buckles 3, said loops being adapted for receiving the thills, as is usual. At the center of the band I connect by stitching or rivets a strap or loop 4, and in the same loosely mount a ring 5.
6 represents the usual back-strap, the forward end of which is in this instance provided with a loop '7, having any ordinary buckle 8, said loop engaging the ring 5, loosely mounted for movement under the strap-loop 4.
9 represents the checkrein-hook, the same consisting of a forward hooked portion 10, the shank of which terminates in an eye 11, which is engaged by the loop 7 of the back-band. To the hook is attached the checkrein in the usual manner.
By my invention the back-band is prevented from any movement, thus obviating chafing and any possibility of the animals back from becoming sore from that cause. I prefer also to omit the usual rings for the passage and guidance of the reins.
It is apparent that my invention may be applied to any single or double harness now in use or may be manufactured with single and double harnesses, to either of which it is equally applicable.
Having described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination, with the back-band 1, terminating in. opposite tug-loops 2 and having the central loop a, of the ring 5, mounted loosely in the loop, and the back-strap 6, terminating in the loop 7, and the checkreinhook 9, having the eye 11, engaging the loop '7, and the forwardly-projecting hook 10, substantially as specified.
2. In a harness, the back --band 1, having the ring 5, mounted loosely on the band, in combination with the back-strap attached to the ring 5 and carrying the checkrein-hook 9, asset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature'in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. WARD.
Witnesses:
JOHN CHARLES DIETZMAN, J. W. REWEY.
