T. PULLER & (7. W; WARREN.
. v Halter. No. 204,084. Patented May 21, 1878..
".PEYERS, PHOTO-UTNOGRAPMEH. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
THOMAS FULLER AND GEORGE W. WARREN OF WELLSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IM PROVEMENT IN HALTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,084, dated May 21, 1878 application filed February 1'2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS FULLER and GEORGE W. WARREN, of Wellsville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form. a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation, showing the application of our improved halter, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the halter detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Our invention relates to halters or headstalls for hitching horses and mules to the stanchion or manger and it consists in an improved construction and arrangement of parts, substan-- tially as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A is the nose-strap, which may be adjusted to fit tightly around the nose of the animal by a buckle, a. B is the headstall or strap, and B B are the cheek-pieces, which are secured to the nose-strap A at right angles by riveting, stitching, or in any other suitable manner. Into the left cheek-piece is inserted a ring or eye, b, partly projecting from the edge of the strap below the buckle c, as shown. The opposite cheek-piece is united, by a ring, 0, cpposite to the ring or eye I), to the headstall B, as shown in Fig. 2.
D is the hitch-strap, which is split at one end into two parts, at d, to the end of each of which is secured a snap-hook, f f and E is a ring, having a right-angle or transverse loop, 9, which slides upon the under (lower) side of nose-strap A under the jaw.
The method of using. our improved halter will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, from which it will be seen that, after the halter has been placed in position upon the head by slipping the headstall over the ears of the animal and adjusting the nose-strap, the hitch-strap D is passed through ring E, and its ends d d hooked onto rings 1) and e by means of the snaphooks f and f, respectively.
The split hitching-strap 1), being passed through the ring E, which slides upon the nose-strap, will prevent chafing of the lower jaw of the animal, with which it does not come in contact, as it would if passed through the nose-strap itself; and, further, this ring serves to contract the two split branches of strap D, so as to insure a better fit of the halter upon the head of the animal.
It will also be observed that our improved halter is composed of only five pieces of leather or webbingviz., the nose strap, two cheekpieces, the headstall or crown-piece, and the split hitching-strap. This halter may be made of leather or web- .bing of any suitable kind, or of leather and webbing combined. It consists of few parts, and can therefore be manufactured at less cost than the halters now generally in use. It is easily applied and adjusted upon the head of the animal, and in less time than it takes to adjust a halter of the ordinary description.
We are aware that it is not new to construct a self-adjustin g halter by the use of a hitchings'trap, branched or otherwise, which slides through the nose-straps, or through one or' more rin gs suitably arranged for the purpose; hence we donot claim this construction, broadly; but,
Having thus described our improvement, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in halters, the combination of the nose-strap A, having the cheekpieces B B and sliding loop-ring g E, headstall B, and split detachable hitching-strap D, having snap-hooks ff for uniting it to the rings 1) e of the cheek-pieces B B, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified. I
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS FULLER. GEORGE WASHINGTON WARREN.
Witnesses: I HUGH J oNEs, ZOMAS H. J oNEs.
