(No Model.)
I No. 496,705.
Patented May 2, 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
LEANDER STAPLES, OF MONROE, MAINE.
HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,705, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed December 15, 1892- Serial No. 4 7 N 111011613 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEANDER STAPLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe,in the county of Waldo and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in halters, and it has for its general object to provide a simple, and durable halter, embodying such a construction that while it may be quickly and easily placed in position upon a horses head and as readily removed therefrom, it cannot be casually displaced after being secured in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a halter embodying such a construction that it may be readily adjusted to fit horses heads of various sizes.
With the foregoing ends in view, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective View of a halter embodying my invention.
Referring by letter to said drawing, A, indicates the nose strap of my improved halter which is provided at opposite ends with loops a, for the reception of rings B, through the medium of which it is connected to the chin strap, as shown. This chin strap 0, which is looped or bent upon itself, as shown, to receive the rings B, is provided at suitable intervals in its length with apertures 19, to receive the tongue of the buckle D, which is secured upon one end of the strap, whereby it will be seen that said strap may be readily lengthened or shortened, when desired, so as to fit horses heads of various sizes which is an important desideratum.
Suitably connected to the rings B, and extending upwardly therefrom are cheek straps D, which are provided at their upper ends with loops 0, to receive the rings E, which are connected in turn with the sections F, G, of the head strap. The head strap section F, which is of a greater length than the section G, is provided at intervals in its length with apertures c, for the engagement of the tongue of the buckle H, which is secured upon the section G. Thus it will be readily perceived that the head strap may be conveniently lengthened or shortened in conformity with the adjustment of the chin strap, when the I halter is to be adjusted to suit horses heads of various sizes.
I, indicates a movable ring which is loosely mounted on the chin strap 0, as shown, and M, indicates the throat latch which is formed from a single piece of leather and is preferably connected at one end in a permanent manner to one of the rings E, although it might be detachably connected to said ring if desired. This latch M, is provided at or about its middle with aloop d, which is formed by connecting the branches of the latch by a rivet e, or the like and is designed to receive the ring I, for a purpose presently described; and the said latch M, is also provided at its end opposite to that which is permanently connected, with a snap hook J, designed and adapted to engage one of the rings E, and hold the latch in its operative position. A throat latch such as just described, will securely hold a halter against casual displacement, inasmuch as the portions of the same above the rivet will closely embrace the throat of the animal. By the provision of the snap hook J, upon one end of the latch it will be readily perceived that such end of the latch may be readily disconnected from the ring E, and the ring I, together with the latch may be moved over against one of the cheek pieces so as to permit of a ready placement of the halter upon a horses head, after which the ring I, and the latch may be returned to their normal position and the hook J, snapped into engagement with the ring E, when the halter will be secured in position.
The snap hook J, is not only advantageous because it effects a quick connection of one end of the latch to the ring E,but is desirable for the reason that it may be placed in engagement with the ring or disengaged therefrom without the necessity of the operator removing his gloves or mittens, which is an important desideratum.
In order to hold the nose strap A, in its proper position at right angles to the cheek ily placed in position, I provide'the short when desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1 As an improved article of manufacture, a halter, substantially as specified, comprising the following elements in combination, viz: a nose strap, rings 13, connected to the ends of the nose strap, the chin strap formed from a single piece of material passed tl'irough the rings B, and looped or bent upon itself and having a buckle and a series of apertures, the cheek straps connected to the rings B, the rings E, connected to the upper ends of said cheek straps, the head strap connected to the rings E, the ring I, loosely mounted on the chin strap, the throat latch formed of a single strap connected to one of the rings E, and passed through the ring I, and having its loop branches connected together, and a snap hook connected to one end of said latch and adapted to engage one of the rings E, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEANDER STAPLES.
