justed to the head of any horse, the rope of which. may be easily replaced when worn, and to obviate splicing or k notting the rope where 1 joints are formed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention 'will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a halter embodying our invention in position upon a horse. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective ofa novel coupling for connecting the crown-strap, throat-latch, and cheek strap.

- Fig. 3 is a perspective of the means employed for connecting the ends of the halter end of the hitching strap. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the means employed for connecting the ends of the rope with each other. Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective showing means for connecting the hitching-strap to the halter.

In carrying out our invention we employ a leather or other strap for the crown and noseband A B of the halter, at the ends of which are formed the usual loops, A B, for the reception of the rope composing the remainder of the halter. In this instance, however, we do not pass the rope directly through the loops AB, but provide for this purpose a malleable cast-iron coupling, 0, for the crownstrap, and a'similarly cast and shaped coupling for the nose-band.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 2 of the drawings, which is a perspective in detail of the casting 0, it Will be seen that it consists of curved rope-seeuring bail portion 0, adapted to rest within the loops A B, which bail'is Serial No. 228,096. (No motleLl provided with the lips O and downwardlydepending arms 0 at the end of one of which is formed the curved loop G, and at the end of the otheris formed astraight loop, 0 through point in an opposite direction for the same purpose. The rope, after having been passed through the couplings described, and in the manner specified, to form the cheekstraps D, throat-latch E, and chin-strap F, the ends are connected in a manner and bya device which We will now proceed to describe. It consists of a truncated coneshaped loop or socket, G, at the larger end of which is formed a hook, G, adapted to take into the usual hitchingring, G, mounted on the chin-strap. The ends of the rope are passed into the socket G. A wedge-shaped key, G grooved upon opposite sides, as at G", is inserted within the socket G between the ends of the rope, thus securely fastening them in the socket.

From the above it is apparent that to read just the halter for a different-size head, or to provide new ropes, it is only necessary to drive the wedge out of the socket, when the result may be consummated. A somewhat similar socket to the one just described is employed to connectthe end of the hitching-rope H with the hitching-ring G as clearly shown in Fig. 5, the only difference being that by reason of only one rope having to be secured the wedge G is grooved upon one side only and curved on its opposite side, and the socket G is designed for the rope end.

Various means for preventing the rope from slipping in the couplings may be provided. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that we have provided spurs Ohadapted to project into the rope, and also an aperture, 0 through which and the rope an ordinary bolt, 0 (see dotted lines,) may be passed. If desired, however, the casting being malleable, the lips C may be turned and clamped upon the rope. The main portion of the bail may be tubular throughout its entire length, or tubular at the ends only, as shown by dotted lines 0 into which a wedge, C, may be driven.

Having described ourinvention and its operation, what we claim is- 1. In a rope halter, a malleable couplingsemicircular rope-receiving bail, with depending arms which have tubular loops at their ends, one of which loops is straight and the other curved outwardly, as and for the purpose described.

3. In a rope halter, a couplingfor connecting the ends thereof, comprising a rope-securing socket having ahook,and a wedge having opposite concave sides, substantially as specified.

4. The combination of the straps A and B, having loops A B, with the couplings 0, constructed as described, and the ropes D and F, substantially as specified.

5. The combination of the straps A and B, the couplings G, constructed as described,with the ropes D, E, and F, socket G, rope H, and ring G substantially as specified.
