Be it known that I, CHARLES J. Dyna, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain improvements in halters or head stalls; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I now believe to be the preferred construct-ion from among other formations and arrangements within the spirit and scope of my invention.

It is an object of the invention to provide certain improvements in halters Whereby restraining pressure will be exerted on tender portions of the animals nose, and upper and lower jaws when the animal attempts to break the halter or hitching connection by pulling back on the hitching connection.

The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and arrangements as more fully and particularly set forth hereinafter.

Referring to the accompanying. drawings :-the single figure of the drawings represents a perspective view of a halter or head stall embodying my invention.

The cheek pieces 1, of the halter or head stall are secured at their lower ends to rings or loops 2, and at their upper ends are secured to rings or loops 3. The nose piece 4, is secured at its opposite ends to the loops 2, while the crown piece or head stall 5, is secured at its opposite ends to the rings 3. The throat latch 6, is also secured at its opposite ends to the rings 3. The chin piece 7 is secured at its opposite ends to the rings or loops 2, although one end of said chin piece is preferably removably secured or coupled to one loop 2, by buckle 8.

A pair of downwardly-diverging opposite side pull-pieces, connections or bolt pieces 9, are provided between the lower, rear or central portion of the throat latch and opposite side portions of the chin piece, and any suitable means are provided for coupling or securing said bolt pieces to the throat latch and to the chin piece. If so desired, the upper ends of said bolt pieces can be fixedly secured to the throat latch, although I prefer to secure the upper ends of said bolt pieces to a single slide or ring 10, slidably confined on and to the throat latch. The lower ends of said bolt pieces are secured to rings or loops 11, loosely receiving the chin piece and slidable thereon. These rings 11, are arranged at opposite side portions of the chin piece so as to lie against opposite sides of the under portion of the lower jaw of the animal.

The hitching'strap or other hitching connection is applied to the rear portion of the chin piece at a point between the two opposite rings 11. For instance, I show a loose ring 12, on the central rear portion of the chin piece to receive the hitching connection;

The arrangement of the two divergingbolt pieces extending from the central portion of the throat latch to the opposite side portions of the chin piece, is such that when applied to the animal the bolt pieces will rest against the under surface of the lower jaw and the rings 11, will lie against opposite sides of the lower jaw, and excessive pull on the hitching connection through the chin piece and ring 12, will cause such restraining pressure of the bolt pieces and rings 11, on the lower jaw (and of the nose piece and rings 2, on the nose and upper jaw) as to deter the animal from exerting such pulling force and strain as to break the hitching connection or its fastenings.

The various bands or pieces of the halter are so proportioned in length as to maintain (1) the nose band in position to exercise restraining pressure on the tender portion of the nose a distance above the nostrils, (2) the two opposite side pressure loops 2, in position to exercise restraining pressure on the tender portions at the opposite sides of the upper jaw, and (3) the two pressure rings 11, in position to exercise restraining pressure on the tender portions at opposite sides of the lower jaw, when the animal atto said five tender portions of the animals head.

Of course, it is understood that the halter comprising my invention can be made of any suitable material, and that the application of my invention is not limited to the particular halter construction illustrated.

It is evident that various changes, variations and modifications might. be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact disclosure hereof.

What- I claim is 1- 1. A halter embodying means to uphold the same on the animals head, and comprising cheek pieces; a throat latch coupled to said check pieces; a nose piece arranged to apply restraining pressure across the tender portion of the animals nose; :1 chin piece; members coupling the nose, chin and cheek pieces together and maintained by said pieces in position to apply restraining pressure on tender portions at opposite sides of the animals upper jaw; and a bolt connection from the central portion of the throat latch to opposite side portions of the chin piece and comprising pressure members loosely receiving said opposite side portions of the chin piece and arranged to apply restraining pressure on tender portions at opposite sides of the animals lower jaw; the central portion of the chin piece adapted to receive the hitching connection.

2. A halter comprising a crown piece adjustable in length; cheek pieces coupled thereto and upheld thereby; a throat latch coupled thereto and adjustable in length; a nose piece arranged to apply restraining pressure on the animals nose; a chin piece adjustable in length; pressure members coupling the chin and nose pieces together and to the cheek pieces and maintained in position to apply restraining pressure at opposite sides of the animals upper jaw; and a bolt connection from the central. portion of the throat latch to the opposite side portions of the chin piece and comprising pressure members loosely receiving the chin piece and arranged to apply restraining pressure at opposite side portions of the lower jaw; the central portion of the chin piece adapted to have the hitching connection coupled thereto.
