JACOB J. HARRIS, OF HIGHLAND, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING HORSES SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,387, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed October 9, 1890. Serial No. 367,549. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB J. HARRIs,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Highland, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Horses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to harness attachments for horses.
The object of the invention is to provide a harness adapted to be used in shoeing horses, to prevent the animal from kicking, and holding him in submission when he is fractious.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, l ig'ure 1 is a view showing the application of my improvement to the front leg of a horse, two different positions of the leg being shown, that in full lines showing the position of the leg while nailing, and the dotted lines while clinching the nails. Fig. 2 is a view showing the application of the attachment to the hind leg of a horse in full and dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment detached. Fig. 4t is a detail view of a loop formed on a separate piece for encircling the hind leg.
This harness is preferably made up of rope, two pieces being employed to form the attachment shown in Fig. 3, while the loop shown in Fig. at is formed on a separate piece of rope.
Referring to the drawings, A and I refer to two-part clips, each piece of which is provided with three semicircular recesses through which the ropes O and D pass. These twopart clips are secured to each other. by bolts or other suitable fastening devices, so as to clamp the same securely upon the ropes O and D. The clip A has a flat exterior face, while the clip B is formed with a projection b, perforated for the reception of a ring I). To connect the ropes to each other properly,
in Fig. 1.
the rope D is passed through the central recess of the clip B, the end thereof lying within the central recess of the clip A. The rope 0 passes through the clip A to form a loop, the ends being secured between the parts of the clip B. The securing-bolts of the clip pass through the ropes, and not only serve to hold the parts of the clip together and clamped on the ropes, but also prevent the ropes slipping in the clips. The rope D extends beyond the clip 13 and is looped into the eye or ring of a buckle E, which has bails, beneath which the ends of a strap F pass, the strap being held to said buckle by the rigid tongues or pins 6.
The device illustrated in Fig. 3 and just described is adapted for use without the employment of any supplemental means for holding the leg of the animal in clinching the nails on the hind leg; but in shoeing a horse, as to nailing the shoe upon the hoof of the hind leg, as well as nailing and clinching upon the front legs, I use, in connection with the device shown in Fig. 3, a rope having a loop formed in the end, as shown in Fig. 4. This rope G is of considerable length, a socket g confining one end to form the loop, while said loop is made adjustable by a strap and buckle H, which strap also serves to confine the loop upon the leg of the animal adjacent to the hoof. a,
\Vith each attachment I furnish an additional strap and buckle F E, for use as shown In use the loop C is passed around the front leg of the animal, and the band portion consisting of three thicknesses of rope is passed over the back of the animal, after which the parts are placed, adjusted, and adapted to be manipulated, as shown in the drawings.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In aharness attachment for the purpose set forth, the ropes or flexible connections O and D, connected to each other by clampsA and B, one of said clamps carrying a ring, the rope G, forming a loop adjacent to the clamp A, a strap and buckle having a loop through which the flexible connection I) passes, the
IOO
free end of said rope being passed through the strap F and auxiliary rope G, having a looped 1 l ring carried by the clasp 1-3, substantially as end, for the purpose set forth. IO set forth. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in 2. A harness attachment consisting of a presence of two Witnesses. flexible connection O,having an end 100p and JACOB J. HARRIS. flexible connection D, clamped to each other, Witnesses: as shown, the connection D, extending be- JOHN I IANLEY, yond the clamp B, in combination with the LEVI SMITH.
