N. D. MERTZ.
HALTER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 30. 1914.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
IHE NORRIS PETERS C0. PHOTO-LITHD WASHINGTON. D. c.
NATHANIEL I). MERTZ, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
HALTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL D. Mnn'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to halters and consists in the peculiar construction and connection of certain parts whereby I obtain a halter of a superior class as will be hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
In the accompanying drawings, which will illustrate a halter embodying my invention and form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a front elevation, Fig. 3 a top plan view, and Fig. a a detailed perspective showing the manner in which the brow-band is slidably adjustable through the ends of the crown-piece.
Referring to the drawings by letter, the same letter indicates corresponding and like parts in all the figures.
Letter A designates the cheek-pieces, B the crown-piece, C the jaw-pieces, D the nose-piece. The cheek-pieces A are preferably connected with the nose-piece D and the jaw-pieces C by the loop G. The crownpiece B is preferably connected with the cheek-pieces A by the loop H.
a designates a metal buckle by which the cheek-pieces A may be adjusted.
b is a short piece of leather to which is fastened the metal buckle b by which the crown-piece B may be adjusted. Where the crown-piece B connects with the loop H an opening a is made in which is slidably mounted the brow-band F.
cl is a metal ring which connects the jawpieces C.
F designates the brow-band which consists of a single piece of rope, the opposite ends of which pass through the openings 0 on opposite ends of the crown-piece, thence through the metal ring J, which ring J adjusts the brow-band in such a manner as to form a throat-latch. After passing through the ring J the brow-band F continues on through the metal ring (1, which connects the jaw-pieces C, and is then permanently attached to the ring I by intertwining the pieces, a crown piece, a brow band, and a hitching strap connected to the brow band so constructed and arranged that a pull upon the strap will tighten the brow band about the brow of the animal.
2. A halter including a nose piece, cheek pieces, a crown piece, a brow band arranged for movement relative to and transversely of said crown piece, and a hitching strap so connected with the brow band that a pull upon the strap will tighten the brow band about the head of the animal.
3. A halter provided with a nose piece, cheek pieces, a crown piece, and a slidably mounted brow band.
A. A halter provided with a nose piece. cheek pieces, a crown piece and a brow band slidably mounted in said crown piece.
5. In a halter a brow band, a nose-piece, jaw-pieces, cheek-pieces fastened to said nose-piece and jaw-pieces, and having their upper extremities fastened to a crown-piece, means being provided at the ends of the crown-piece by which the brow-band is slidably mounted, a throat-latch, means for adjusting the cheek and crown pieces, and a hitching strap so connected with the brow band that a pull upon the strap will tighten the brow band about the brow of the animal.
6. In a halter a brew band, a nose-piece, cheek-pieces and jaw-pieces, said nose-piece and jaw-pieces being fastened together so as to form a continuous piece, the cheekpieces being fastened to the nose-piece and j aw-pieces, the cheek-pieces also being fastened at their upper extremities to a crownpiece, the said crown-piece being provided at the point of connection of the cheek-pieces and crown-piece with means for slidably mounting the brow-band, a throat-latch, means for adjusting the cheek and crown pieces, and a hitching strap so connected with the brow band that a pull upon the strap will tighten the brow band about the brow of the animal.
7. In a halter the combination of a brow band, a nose-piece, jaw-pieces fastened to the nose-piece, cheek-pieces fastened to the nose and jaw pieces at the point of connection of the nose-piece and jaw-pieces, the cheek-pieces also being connected at their upper extremities to a crown-piece, the ends of said crown-piece being returned upon itself to form loops in which the brow-band is slidably mounted, means for adjusting the cheek and crown pieces, and a hitching strap so connected with the brow band that a pull upon the strap will tighten the brow band about the head of the animal.
8. In a halter a nose piece, jaw-pieces connected to said nose-piece and connected at their extremities by a metal ring, cheek pieces fastened to said nose-piece and jawpieces, the said cheek-pieces being fastened at their upper extremities to a crown-piece., the ends of the crown-piece'being returned upon itself so as to form loops, a brow-band slidably mounted in said loops so as to tighten, when the hitching strap is pulled upon, the ends of said brow-band after pass ing through said loop, then passing through In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
