To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRIS TALLMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in harness, and the object of the invention is an improved halter which is quite eflicient in use and which may be easily and quickly adjusted to fit heads of difierent sizes, the halter possessing to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, durability and strength and being susceptible of being cheaply manufactured.

Vith this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features of in the appended claim.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of my improved halter; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the halter detached; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view illustrating the manner of coiling the rope to form the lower portion of the halter.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

My improved halter includes a crown piece 1 which is in the form of a leather strap consisting of separate sections that are adjustably connected together at their meeting ends by means of a buckle 2. at their remote ends the sections are doubled upon themselves and riveted to provide guide loops or eyes 3. The remaining portion of the halter is preferably constructed of a single length of stout rope or other suitable material, which is doubled upon itself at an intermediate point, as indicated at 4, to form the upwardly divergent branches 5 of the throat piece. The upper ends of the branches pass freely through the loops or eyes 3 and are returned for- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly and downwardly to constitute the companion cheek piece 6. The nose piece 7 is a closed loop and is formed by coiling the end portions of the rope at the lower ends of the cheek pieces. The check pieces are permanently secured to the nose piece on opposite sides thereof and are preferably fastened thereto by means of pairs of binder wires 8. The binder wires of each pair are twisted around the adjacent strands of rope to be connected together, at points in close proximity to each other. The nose piece is of double thickness, that is, consists of two strands of rope, on its under or rear side be tween the cheek pieces, as indicated at 9, the nose piece being of only single thickness on its upper side. The extremities of the rope are brought together opposite the point of attachment of one of the cheek pieces to the nose piece, and all three parts are engaged by the adjacent pair of binder wires 8. The doubled portion 1 of the rope passes through a metallic ring 10 which is loosely mounted on the under side of the nose piece between the cheek pieces, the ring serving to connect the lower end of the throat piece with the nose piece. By having the under side of the nose piece of double thickness, this part is considerably strengthened and is not likely to become soon worn out by the ring 10. i

A sleeve 11 of leather or the like, is slidably mounted on the lower portions of the branches 5 so as to hold said branches together and to provide at the lower terminal of the throat piece a closed loop within which the ring 10 is confined. The upper portion of each branch 5 is adjustably connected to the upper portion of the adja cent cheek piece 6. The connection is preferably effected through the medium of a slide 12 formed of a suitable strip of leather that is reversely curved and riveted to provide a pair of parallel sleeves through which the respective parts are threaded. The halter is provided with a hitching piece or strap 13 that is secured thereto through the medium of a snap hook let engaging the ring 10.

In practice, the halter may be adjusted to fit horses heads of different sizes, by merely drawing the rope through the respective guide loops 8 and through the pairs of sleeves of the adjacent slides 12. This results in the variation of the relative lengths of the cheek pieces and throat piece. The

adjustment of the parts may also be accomplished by moving the slides 12 longitudinally so as to connect the adjacent cheek pieces 6 and branches 5 together at diiferent points. The sleeve 11' is adjusted on the branches 5 to regulate the point from which said branches diverge and to cause the halter to fit snugly around the jaw of the animal.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I have provided an improved halter which is quite eliicient in use and which is simple, durable and strong in construction. By having the major portion of the halter formed of a single length of rope, the device is rendered capable of being easily and cheaply manufactured.

In forming the nose piece, one end portion of the rope is curved transversely between the cheek pieces to provide a substantially circular closed loop which defines the complete outline of the nose piece. The other end portion of the rope laps halfway i 1 l l l l around the loop between the cheek pieces at the under side of the nose piece, the parts being secured together by the binder wires as hereinbefore described.

Having-thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A halter comprising a crown piece, a throat piece, cheek pieces, the lower end of one cheek piece being bent to constitute a closed loop connecting the cheek pieces, and forming a partoi the nose piece, the lower end o1 the other cheek piece extending along the under side of the loop between the cheek pieces to complete the formation of the nose piece, and a ring loosely mounted on the under side of the nose piece and connected to the lower end of the throat 'piece.
