To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at McRae, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that type of halters which are comprised of rope and leather parts, and which are designed particularly for use in connection with Wild or unbroken horses.

The halter consists mainly of nose and head straps adjustably connected together the several parts being peculiarly arranged, and the connections being of a special form conducive to simplicity but providing a halter of great strength and one which is particularly satisfactory for the purpose before referred to.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following detail description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing a halter embodying the invention, the same being shown as when in actual use; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the halter, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the slide applied to the chin loop of the halter.

Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

Referring particularly to the drawings and specifically describing the construction of the invention preferred the numeral 1 denotes a head strap and the numeral 2 the nose strap. The head strap 1 is adjustable by means of a buckle 3 in its length Whereas the nose strap is not in itself adjustable, opposite ends thereof being merely looped to connect the same with a pair of runners 4. Above the runners 4 are arranged another pair of runners 5 which are connected with the ends of the head strap 1. The runners 4 and 5 each consist of a plate or body pro vided with an opening by means of which the adjacent strap part is connected, two loops or tubular members 6 being carried by the body of each runner and arranged in divergent positions so as to permit of free adjustment of the rope part of the halter which passes therethrough. The members 6 snugly receive the rope part aforesaid so that when the latter is once adjusted with respect to the runners the latter will hold the same in such adjustment.

The rope part of the halter is indicated at 7 and is made preferably in one piece, this being permitted by reason of its peculiar arrangement and connection with the strap parts 1 and 2. The rope part 7 is looped intermediate of its ends to provide a central or chin loop 8 for the halter, the opposite end portions of the rope forming side loops 9 connected with the runners 4. On the chin loop 8 of the rope 7 is a tubular slide member 10 and this slide is formed with spaced eyes 11. From the central loop 8 of the rope 7 the ends of said rope pass through the loops 6 of the runners 4, thence upwardly through the loops 6 of the runners 5 and thence downwardly through the eyes 11 on the slide 10. Above the slide 10 the end portions of the rope 7 are adjustably connected by a sleeve 12 which merely embraces the adjacent portions of the rope and is adjustable for obvious purposes though snugly receiving such rope. After passing downwardly through the eyes 11 of the slide 10 the extremities of the rope are connected. together and attached to a ring. 13 by which the animal to which the halter is applied may be readily hitched.

It is to be noted that tension on the rope 7 Will create a pull or draw on the head of the animal, the pull being sustained directly by the head strap 1. This prevents choking of the animal as is possible when the pull is mainly on the nose strap 2.

The several advantages of the halter embodying the present invention will be appreciated in view of the foregoing description.

Having thus described the invention, what F is claimed as new, is:

A halter comprising nose and head straps, the head strap being adjustable, runners connected with the ends of the nose and head straps, each of said runners embodying a plate attached to the adjacent strap part and divergently arranged adjusting loops carried by said plate, and a rope folded between its ends to provide a chin loop and having its end portions extending from said loop through the loops on the runners of the nose strap, and thence through the loops on the runners of the head strap, a sleeve slidably mounted on the chin loop of the rope and provided with spaced eyes, the ends of the In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
