HALTER.
Application filed January 29, 1916.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewellen, in the county of Garden and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to improvements m halters, one object of the invention being to provide a halter in which the members are made of malleable steel, to secure strength and durability and are covered with leather or the like and thus caused to resemble straps; another object of the invention being to provide expansible cheek pieces for the halter so that the halter may be adjusted to fit a horse of any size; another object being to effect improvements in the construction of the link which connects the throat strap to the throat latch; and another object being to provide the throat latch with a snap hook for securing the halter on the horses head.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln 'the accompanying drawings :--F1gure 1 is a side elevation of a halter constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the saine. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. l. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
The head stall 1, throat latch 2, cheek pieces 3, nose band L1, lip straps 5, and throat strap 6 are made of malleable steel as at 7 and are each provided with a cover 8 of leather or the like, the malleable steel construction rendering the halter extremely strong and durable and the covering serving to make the parts appear as straps and to protect the malleable steel parts from eX- posure to the weather. The ends of the malleable core` of the head stall are double, engaged with rings 9, and riveted as at 10. The throat latch comprises a pair of members, the cores of which are similarly double, riveted and are engaged, one with one of the rings 9, and the other with a loop end 11 of a snap hook 12. The lower ends of the throat latch members 2 are similarly connected to opposite sides of a link 13, said link having a triangular upper portion 14 and a loop end 15, the latch members 2 be- Specication of Letters Patent.

ing connected to the sides of the triangular portion of said link as shown.
The nose band 4 has the ends of its core member similarly connected to square links 16. Each cheek piece 3 comprises a member 17 connected to one of the rings 9 and a member 1S connected to one of the links `16. The members 18 are hollow and form sheaths to receive the members 17 and in which said members 17 are longitudinally adjustable so that the check pieces may be extended or contracted in length to vary the length of the halter so that the halter may be adapted to it the head of a horse of any size. The members 17 and 18 of the check pieces are provided with adjusting openings 19 and 20 respectively and set screws 21 may be fitted in said openings to secure the members of the check pieces at any desired longitudinal adjustment.
The lip straps 5, are two in number, are connected at one end to the links 16, and have their lower ends connected to a triangular link 22 which is also engaged by a ring 23 which serves for the attachment of a rope, strap, or chain. r1`he throat strap 6 connects the link 22 with the loop end 15 of the link 13.
By the provision of the snap hook and link ring for securing the throat latch, the use of a buckle in the throat latch is entirely dispensed with and the longitudinally adjustable cheek pieces also enable the buckles to be dispensed with.
My improved halter is exceedingly strong and durable, may be readily manufactured at slight cost, and is very serviceable, may be readily adjusted and may be easily put on or taken oli from the head of a horse.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A halter comprising a head strap, link V rings connected to the ends thereof, cheek pieces having their upper ends connected to i enel connected to a snap hook for engageto said triangular link.
