0. A. HARMSTEAD. COMBINED BRAGE FOE BROW BANDS AND WINKERS FOR BRIDLES.
Patented Alig. 31, 1886.
INVENTOR- ill/SW11 WITNESSES:
ATTORNEYS.
I UNITED STATES CHARLES A. IIARMSTEAD, OF URBANA, OHIO.
f COMBINED BRACE FOR BROW-BANDS AND WINKERS FOR BRIDLES.
SBPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,207, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed June 17, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. HARM- STEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Urbana, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Braces for Brow-Bands and W'inkers for Bridles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined browband and brace for bridle-winkers; and it consists in details of construction and attachment to the bridle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a bridle embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a bottom plan View of the combined brow-band and winker-brace; and Fig. 3,a section on line 00 m, Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that the headstall A is provided with the winkers C, secured thereto in the ordinary manner. The brow-band B and winkenbraee B are made integral, (or of one piece,) the brow-band being secured to the headstall at a and the winker-brace to the winkers at I). These pieces, which are made of any suitable material, (but preferably of leather,) are spread out centrally at D, and in order to hold them apart and prevent sagging or bending out of shape a stiffening-piece, E, is secured to the central or uniting portion, I), by rivets or in any other suitable way. This combined brow-band and winker-brace is made separately from the b'ridle proper, and can thus be made and sold separately, and therefore materially aid harness-makers in quickly constructing a bridle.
The advantages over the usual form of construction are, that the blinds or winkers are held at equal distances from the horses eyes, and the uneven position of the winkers thus avoided. This unevenness of the winkers, which often occurs in the ordinary form of construction of bridles, is not only unsightly, but often causes undue strain upon the horses eyes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a bridle, a brow-band and winkerbrace made in one piece, the central or uniting portion, D, having a stifiening-piece, E, secured thereto, whereby the winkers are held in position and at equal distances from the eyes of the animal, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the brow band and winker-brace, madeinte ral, and separate from the bridle, of a stiffening-piece secured centrally thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. A. HARMSTEAD.
