CHARLES N. OHADWIOK, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ALICE OHADWICK, OE SAME PLACE. Y
WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 538,8 97, dated May '7, 1895.
Application filed November 5, 1894.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. CHADwIox, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in VVaists; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in elevation of a portion of a waist provided with myimproved garmentsupports; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a similar view showing one of the modified t'ormswhich my invention may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in Waists, such as underwaists and shirt-waists for children, the objects being to provide such Waists with simple, convenient and effective means for the attachment of other garments to them, and to make the attachment and support of the other garments as unobtrusive as possible.
With these ends in view, my invention conv sists in certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim. In carrying out my invention, as shown, I employ a garment-support consisting solely of a short, flexible connection A, provided with two buttons B B', located at its respective ends, and permanently secured thereto. The said connection Vmay consist of a cord, or a tape or a strap, and preferably the material employed will be elastic, though that is not essential. Such garment-supports are vertically arranged -with one button' above the other in the body C, and vertical bands C', of the waist, 'whether that be ashirt waist, or an underwaist. The small portion of a waist shown byFig. 1 of the drawings, is provided with only one of the vertical bands, but it will be understood that eachwaist contains several of them. For the application of the garment-supports, each band is constructed with an opening D, which, as shown, is a vertical opening, while the body O of the waist is constructed at a point directly back of the open- Serial No. 527,899. (No model.)
ing I), withacorrespondingopening'D'. The lower button B' of the garment-support is located upon the outer face ofv the band, where it is exposed for the attachment of the garment, while the lower end of the connec 55 tion A extends inward from the said button B', through both of the said openings D and D', and directly upward on the inner face of the body of the waist, and directly behind the band, to a vertical opening or button-hole D2, 6o which is located above the opening D', and through which the upper button B of the garment support is passed, so as to locate it between the said body and the inner face of the band C', whereby the upper button B', and 65 the main portion of the connection A, are concealed from view, and the strain or draft upon the garment-support taken by the described application of the upper button to the body of the waist, which, it will be understood, is 7o reinforced by the application of the vertical band to its outer surface. Only the lower button B' and a small portion of the connection A are seen, which makes the garment-support as appliedvvery unobtrusive and neat. When it is desired to lauuder the waist, the garmentsupport is readily removed, and it is, with ,equal convenience, re-applied.
In the modified construction shown by Fig.
3, a tape containing a buttomhole, or a loop 8o of cord E, is secured to the inner face of the body F of the waist, for the receptionv of the upper button G ofthe garment-support, which also consists ofa short flexible connection G', and a lower button G2, which is exposed upon 8 5 the outer face of the band H, while the lower end of the connection passes forward through an opening H' formed in the band, and an opening F' formed in the body of thewaist. The tapeor cord E is locatedback of the band 9o I-I, which reinforces the waist.
I am aware that it is old to provide a waist with a removable garment-support exposed entirely upon the outside of the waist, and constructed at its upper end with a buttonh'ole adapting it to be buttoned to a button permanently fastened to the outside ot the waist, and provided at its lower end with a button for the attachment of a depending garment. In the old construction just described, roc
however, the entire article is exposed upon the outside ofthe waist, instead of being partially concealed, and carries only one button, the other 4being applied to the Waist, and likely to 5 be detached therefrom in laundering.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination with a Waist having a verio tical band applied to the outer surface of its body, of a garmentsupport consistingr solely of a short, flexible connection, and a button permanently applied to the respective ends thereof, the said garment-support being re- 15 inovably attached to the said body and band, with one button directly above the other, and with the lowerbutton exposed upon the outer CHARLES N. CIIADWICK.`
