Description
- (No ModeL) J. H. BILLINGS.
SHIRT ADJUSTER.
No. 489,921. Patented Jan. 17, 189B.
A TTOHNE Y8.
UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. BILLINGS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT-ADJ USTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,921, dated January 17, 1893. Application filed March 29, 1892. Serial N0.4=26,908. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BILLINGS, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt-Adjuster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Most men have difficulty in getting a good fitting shirt, that is, a shirt made in such a way that the bosom will lie straight and flat upon the person. This is especially true of dress shirts, as in dress suits the vest is cut low and forms but little support for the shirt bosom. The tab at the lowenend ofthebosom serves no useful purpose in most cases, as it seldom comes in the right place to button properly to a drawers button.
The object of my invention is to overcome the difficulties named and produce a simple yielding attachment which may be cheaply made, which may be very easily applied to a shirt, and which will hold the shirt bosom down tightly and yet permit the necessary freedom of movement to the wearer of the shirt.
To this end my invention consists in ashirt adjuster, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the adjuster to a shirt; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the adjuster; and Fig.3 is a front view of the same.
The body of the adjuster consists of an elastic band 10, the ends of which are adjustably united by a buckle 11, thus forming a loop, and the two strands of the band below the buckle are clasped by a suitable keeper 12. At the upper end of the loop is a button 13 comprising a base plate 14 which is slotted near one side, as shown at 15, in order that the band 10 may be passed through it, and a stud 16 projecting from the base plate, the button, with the exception of the slot in one side, being substantially like the ordinary stud.
At the lower end of the loop is a fastener 17 havinga V-shaped lower end 18 adapted to engage a button of the drawers, and the upper part of the fastener is held looselyin theloop. This style of fastener isa common one and is especially adapted for the purpose named, but other forms of fasteners may be used without departing from the principle of myinvention.
To apply the invention the stud 16 is buttoned into the shirt tab 19 and the fastener 18 is hooked over one of the drawers buttons 20. If the shirt tab and drawers are relatively far apart, the fastener 17 is hooked upon one of the upper drawers buttons, and if the parts are nearer together the fastener may be secured to a button lower down. The adjuster may thus be secured so that it will pull the shirt bosom down to place, and the elasticity of the body portion will permit it to stretch so that the wearer will have all the necessary body movement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
A shirt adjuster, comprising a stud or button having a broad flat base with a slot therein, an elastic band held in the slot and provided with an adjusting buckle, and a metallic fastening loop held upon the band and adapted to engage a drawers button, substantially as described.
JOHN H. BILLINGS.
