Be it known that I, GEORGE SOHMITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt and Garment Fasteners, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention is an improvement in that class of devices which are adapted for detachable connection with a shirt-waist and belt for the purpose of supporting either skirts or trousers. It is thus adapted to be worn by either sex and is so constructed, that it may be quickly applied or detached and forms when in use an ornamental attachment of the belt.

The device is simple in construction, highly efiicient in use, and may be manufactured at small cost.

The details of construction, arrangement, and application of the device are as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view illustrating the practical application of my invention for supporting a ladys skirt. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section illustrating the details of arrangement and attachment. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my device, which is shown applied in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged 'detail section illustrating the arrangement and application of another form of my invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of such modified form. Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the arrangement of a loop on the shirt-waist to which the form of device shown in Figs. 4c and 5 is adapted to be attached.

I will first describe my invention as illustrated and applied in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. As shown in the latter figure, the device A consists of a narrow metal bar bent into the form of an inverted U and provided with a button or disk 3, forming a rear extension, and with lateral extensions forming practically a cross-bar 4. The front prong or arm 1 of the device A is preferably made somewhat longer than the parallel prong 2. The latter is provided with holes to adapt it to be sewed in place, as will be presently described. The

button or disk 3 is attached to the rear side of the rear prong 2, but projects therefrom sufiiciently to allow space for the waistband of the shirt-waist. The cross-bar L is arranged on the rear prong 2 near its upper edge. The entire device A forms practically a rigid or integral structure. The device is applied in the following manner: The rear prong 2, together with the cross-bar 4:, is secured to the waistband G of a skirt, the same being inserted between the outer fabric and the lining and secured in place by stitches passing through the holes in the prong and around the cross-bar 4. The device is thus made a permanent attachment of the waistband. The cross-bar 4 also serves to hold the device in due position-that is to say, with the outer prong or arm standing out from the waistband of the trousers and the button 3 or hook 3, &c., parallel to or flat against the body of the wearer, which is the safest position and the one causing least wear to the underclothing. The button or disk 3 is passed through a buttonhole 6, (see Fig. 2,) formed in the waistband F of the shirt-waist, and the front prong 1 passes over the belt H. \Thus the skirt is supported from the waistband F or mainly from the belt H, or from both. It will be seen that the belt H may be dispensed with and the support for the skirt G derived entirely from the shirt-waist F, or, on the other hand, in case no shirt-waist be worn, but some other garment not adapted for the same function, the belt H may form the sole support for the skirt. It will be understood, however, that in general the device will be applied and worn as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. It is apparent that the belt may be detached by simply unbuckling it in the usual way and that it may be as easily applied beneath the prongs 1. It will also be seen that the attachment to and detachment from the shirtwaist band F involves merely the operation of passing a button or disk 3 through the buttonhole 6.

The modified form B of my invention (illustrated in Fig. 5 and as applied in Fig. 4) differs from the form A solely in the substitution of a hook 3 for the button or disk 3. The said hook 3" passes up under the waistband F and engages a loop 5, (see Figs. 4 and 6,) which is secured to the inner side of the band. with the plane of the bar 4.

It will be seen that in they several forms of my invention above described the button 3 and hook 3 are attached to the rear or inner prong of the device A at such point that they are below the top of said device, or at least do not project above it, and that they project laterally from the device and lie parallel thereto. By these characteristics of position, construction, and arrangement the attaching-button 3 or hook 3 is concealed when in use, whether a belt be worn or not, is adapted to be easily engaged with and disengaged from the upper garment, and lies flat against the body of the wearer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The improved garment-fastener, consisting of the body portion having the form of an inverted U, the rear or inner prong of the The hook proper lies flat or parallel same having the lateral extensions 4, and an attaching device which projects from said prong and lies parallel thereto and below the top of the body portion, as shown and described.

2. The improved garment-fastener consisting of the inverted-U-shaped body portion, having an attaching device projecting from the rear prong and lying parallel thereto, as shown and described.

3. The combination,with a garment for covering the lower portion of the person, of the described fastener having an inverted-U- shaped body portion whose rear prong is provided with an attaching device projecting rearward and the lateral extension 4, the latter being secured to the waistband of the garment and the attaching device projecting on the inner side of the same, as shown and described.
