SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION o g pa Of Letters Patent No: 782,119, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed April 11,1904. Serial No. 202,674.
Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and Lil State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in suspenders, and more particularly to such as are adapted for use for supporting cartridgebelts, the object of the invention being to construct suspenders for the purpose above mentioned which shall be of simple and durable structure, which shall comprise very few separate parts, which can be manufactured cheaply without detractingfrom the efliciency of the article for the purpose stated, and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a general view of suspenders embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the suspender-ends.
1 represents the body portion of the suspenders, and preferably consists of heavy multiply-woven fabric having selvaged edges. The body portion 1 is made at its respective ends with integral straps 2 2 and 2 2, said straps being woven with the body portion, so as to normally lie slightly separated, or, in other words, said straps are preferably made to diverge slightly from their point of union with the body 1 to their free ends, and both edges of each strap are selvaged. During the weaving the upper end of each strap end is slightly beveled, as shown at 3, so that each strap end is slightly less than half the width of the body portion 1. A buckle at is located on each strap end and comprises a rectangular frame, having an intermediate cross-bar 5, and the latter is provided with teeth to engage the strap.
A sheet-metal clip 6 is pivotally attached to the cross-bar of the buckle. The free end of the strap end is bent upon itself to form a loop 7, which supports a hook 8 for attachment of the suspenders to the cartridge-belt, and the free extremity of said loop has the sheet-metal clip 6 securely riveted thereto. By means of the devices above described the strap ends can be readily shortened or lengthened, as may be necessary for the accommodation of the wearer, and by means of the hooks 8 the suspenders can bequickly attached to or detached from the belt. The straps above referred to at respective ends of the body 1, are for attachment to the front portion of the belt at points corresponding approximately with the location of buttons on trousers. For attachment of the suspenders to the rear portion of the belt a strap 9 is provided, and one end of this strap is furnished with a buckle and hook in precisely the same manner as above described. The strap 9 is connected with the body 1 by means of a double metal loop 10, the larger of the two loops being mounted to move freely on the body 1 of the suspenders and the smaller loop permitting the free passage of the narrow strap 9. This narrow strap 9 is also made of multiply-woven fabric having selvaged edges.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details shown and described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Suspenders comprising a body portion made in a single piece and having integral strap portions at its respective ends, each of said strap portions having an adjustable loop at its free end, attaching means carried by said loops, a separate back strap having an adjustable loop at one end, attaching means carried by said loop, attaching means at the other end of said strap, and means for movably connecting said back strap with the body portion of the suspenders.
2. Suspenders comprising a body portion,
justing one of said last-mentioned fastening I devices.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
