Description

CLARK-S. (JOMSTOOK, OF BLOOMFIFLD, NEW JERSEY.
Patented August 4, 1903.
PATENT FEIcE.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,343, dated August 4, 1903.
Application filed April 14, 1903- To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, CLARK S. CoMsrocK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in loop-buckles, the object being to produce an article of this kind or character which shall be adapted for use in connection with buttons of different sizes or having different-size hubs. Loops or loop -buckles of the kind hereinafter referred to are largely used upon the ends of shoulder-straps or suspenders of overalls and are intended to engage with a button riveted or otherwise secured to the waistband of the garment. It many times occurs, however, that the button, or rather the hub thereof, is of such a size as to prevent its proper engagement with the end of the loop, being either too large or too small, the consequence beingthat when the straps are loosened or slackened the loop becomes detached from the button, causing annoyance to the wearer. To overcome this defect, I have constructed the engaging end of the loop, having button-engaging portions of different sizes, in such a way that it will receive and hold buttons of different sizesand otherwise. improve the article now in present use, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a loop-buckle constructed in accordance with my invention and attached to the end of a strap and in engagement with a button. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the buckle detached from the strap. Fig. i is a view of a modification.
. Referring to the drawings, A represents the end of a strap or suspender to which is secured the loop-buckle B, the lower end of the latterbeing engaged with the button 0, se cured to the garment D. The upper portion E of the buckle is constructed in the usual manner, the lower or loop portion F, how- I ever, having the button-engaging end so bent or curved as to form the button-engaging Serial No. 152,534. (No model.)
loops ff, the former being somewhat larger thanthe latter, whereby should the hub of the button 0 be too small to properly engage with the loop f it will be effectually held in the smaller or lower loop f and prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom, as would be the case should the loop F be made or formed with but one size of engaging loop.
WVhile I have shown the article constructed with but two engaging loops of diiferent sizes, it will be understood that, if desired, the number may be increased. It will also be understood that my invention may be applied to loops as well as to loop-buckles, as illustrated in Fig. 4c, in which event the article G is sewed or stitched to the end of the strap instead of being buckled thereto, as before described.
As will be seen in the drawings, the upper side portions of the loop diverge at pronounced angles, so as to provide a greater amount of yield or resiliency, whereby the loops will easily spring to permit of the engagement of the device with the shank or hub of the button.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An article of the character described constructed with a loop proper, the lower end of which is bent or formed into a plurality of engaging loops of different sizes, whereby to engage with buttons having different-size hubs, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the loop herein described, comprising a loop provided with divergent sides and a plurality of engaging loops of different sizes, the engaging loop at the extremeend being smaller thanthe loop intermediate the same andsaid divergent sides, whereby said device is adapted for use with buttons having different-sized hubs, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 10th day of April, A. D. 1903.
