J. E. LEAVITTQ DBTAGHABLB WAISTBAND.
No. 578,294'. Patented Mar. 2, 1897.
` UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
JOHN E. LEAVITT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO EDWIN G. OARLETON, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DETACHABLE WAISTBAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,294, dated March 2, 1897.
Application led April 22, 1893. Serial No. 471,372. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN E. LEAvIr'r, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Detachable Waistbands, of which the following description, in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to detachable bands for shirt-waists, blouses, and like garments andis especially adapted to be used by children to support the trousers, skirts, and like articles of wearing-apparel. l
My present invention has for its object to provide a waist, blouse, or like article witha waistband, of a construct-ion as will be described, which will afford a greater freedom of movement to the body of the wearer and will relieve the wearer from strain when the body is bent or inclined forward.
In accordance with my invention the waist- 'band for the whole or a portion of its length sers, skirts, or other Wearing-apparel may be secured to hold the same on the body of the wearer.
The particular features of my invention will be pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a small boy standing in an upright position and provided with a waistband embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sufficient portion of the body of the boy shown in Fig. 1 as bent forward to illustrate the working of this invention. Fig. 3 is a developed view of a portion of the shirtwaist shown in Fig. l to more clearly show the construction of band preferred by me; Fig. 4E, an inner side view of substantially one-half of the band shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a sectional detail, on an enlarged scale, to be referred to, the section being taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 8, looking toward the right; and Fig. 6, a perspective View, on an enlarged scale, of
one form of device by which the band is secured to the outside of the Waist.
In the present instance I have chosen to illustrate my invention as ap plied to the shirtwaist d of a boy provided with trousers a.
In accordance with my invention the shirtwaist d has detachably secured to it a waistband composed in Whole or in part of elastic material. The waistband referred to is herein shown (see Fig. 3) as composed of three parts a? a3 c4, the part d3 being made of elastic material, such as an elastic webbing, cord, or tape, and the parts a2 d4 being preferably made of elastic material, but they may be made of non-elastic material.
In accordance with my invention the elastic portion d3 of the band, which in practice is designed to lie at the back of the wearer, is detachably secured to the waist a on the outside thereof, and as one means by which this result may be accomplished I may employ the fastening device shown separately in Fig. 6, it consisting of a hollow or tubular portion a, provided with ears a7 as, forming bearings for a spring rod or pintle having its ends 0,9 d10 turned in opposite directions and engaging arms C412 ali loosely mounted on the said spring rod or pintle. The arms @12 a are adapted to be turned up into a substantially vertical position, that is, substantially at right angles to the tubular portion, so as to permit the said arms to be inserted through a suitable hole or o eninO (115 in the waist as shown in p b a Figs. 3 and 4, to detachably secure the said fastening device to the outside of the waist a.
The elastic rear portion d3 of the band is designed to be inserted through the tubular portion of the fastening and to slide or move freely therethrough, for a purpose as will be described ,and between adjacent fastening devices the said elastic band has secured to it in any suitable or desired manner a button b or other suitable device for engagement with the rear portion of the trousers d'.
The parts d2 a4 are subjected to less strain than the rear portion d5, and therefore, if desired, the said parts d2 d4 may be secured on the inner side of the waist d by means of buttons b2, or other suitable devices, extended through suitable buttonholes b3, the part d2 being herein represented as provided with IOO two buttons b2 and the part CL4 with three buttons. Vhen the parts CL2 CL4 of the band are located on the inner side of the waist CL, as herein shown, they may be detachably secured to the elastic rear portion u?, preferably on the inner side of the waist CL, by inserting the opposite ends of the rear portion CL3 of the band through suitable eyelets or holes b5 h6 and Io joining the ends of the said rear portion to the free end of the parts CL2 CL4, which may be accomplished by hooks la7, attached to the free ends of the parts CL2 CL4, engaging eyes bs, attached to the ends of the rear portion CL3 of the band, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5.
The trousers CL', as herein shown, are secured on the body of the boy by the buttons b b2, which engage suitable buttonholes in the waistband attached to the trousers, and in the normal or upright position shown in Fig. 1 the waistband of the trousers covers the waistband CL, but when the body of the boy is bent forward, as represented in Fig. 2, the rear portion or back of the shirt-waist is elevated, while the rear portion of the trousers is not elevated, but remains practically stationary, owing to the elasticity of the rear portion CL3 of the band, which gives or elongates with the forward movement of the body. rIhe elastic rear portion CL3 slides in the tubular portion of the detachable fastenings, and the sliding movement of the said elastic rear portion is limited by stops, shown as enlargements c at the opposite ends of the said elastic rear portion, which enlargements may be made by knotting the cord or band, or they may be metallic or other pieces fastened to the said band, the said enlargements being larger than the diameter or opening of the tubular portion CL and preventing the cord or band CL3 from being further drawn through the tubular portions of the eXtreme or endmost detachable fastenings.
By the construction of elastic band herein described'the seat of the trousers retains its originalfullness, thereby permitting the body to bend or move forward freely and unhampered and without subjecting the trousers to strain. Furthermore, by means of the elastic connection or rear portion of the band between the outside of the waist CL and the trousers the boy is relieved from compression or cutting action of the band at the front of the body.
lVhen the elastic portion CL3 has been moved so as to bring the stops cinto engagement with the endmost detachable fastenings, as described, the portions of the elastic band between the said stops and the nearest front buttons (marked 2 3 in Fig. 3) are elongated, and the slight strain upon the band is transmitted-to the said side buttons, which, being located at the side of the body, does not hurt or inconvenience the wearer.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the use of a shirt-waist, blouse, or like garment, for the elastic band may be detachably fastened to the outside of a belt, and for the purpose of the claim I shall designate these different wearing articles as a waist-body. Y
When it is desired to wash the waist-body, the band, when constructed as herein shown, may be detached from the waist-body by disconnecting the parts CL2 CL4 from the part d3 and removing the buttons b2 from their buttonholes and next unclamping the detachable fastenings by turning the spring-arms CL12 am up into a position substantially at right angles to that shown in Fig. 6 and withdrawing the said arms from their holes C115.
I claim- The combination with a waist-body, of a band consisting of the parts CL2 CLl secured on the inside of the waist-body, and the elastic portion CL3 detachably secured to the waistbody on the outside of the same, and connections joining the ends of the elastic portion a3 to the parts CL2 d4, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my' name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN E. LEAVITT.
