B. GOODMAN.
SUSBENDERS.
Patented Ma N. PETERS Plum-Lithographer, wllhingtun, QC.
UNITED STATE if PATENT OFFICE.
BURKARD GOODMAN, on NEW YORK, N. ;Y
SUSIPEN'DERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,580, dated May '7 1889.
Application filed January 8,1889. serial No. 295,783. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURKARD GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, My invention pertains to improvements in suspenders; and it consists, essentially, in the provision of a ventilating suspender-strap,
as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The unhealthful nature and disagreeable sensationproduced by closely-woven shoulder-straps of suspenders in contact with the wearer While the body is in a high tempera ture are well knownand readily appreciated. With no means of ventilation the said straps start the perspiration from the pores of the body and often produce a chafing and uncomfortable feeling; and the use of suspenders is therefore often dispensed with by reason of said defects.
With these previous disadvantages in view the object of my improvement is to provide either elastic or non-elastic shoulder-straps of suspenders with reticulations or openings to permit the air to pass to and from the part of the body covered by said straps. I attain this object by the preferred construc-' elastic or non-elastic binding braids or threads a arran ed in such a manner as to form openings or reticulations a at regular intervals throughout the entire length of the straps for ventilating that part of the body covered by said straps. The two ends of the straps A are provided with metallic bindingstrips (1 and are adapted to receive buckles B, from which depend securing-tabs B.
The straps A may be formed of a single length or of two sections, and in either form have a leather binding-support, O, centrally secured thereto, from which depends the rear securing-tab, 0. Any form of buckle B may be used, and likewise many varied tabs B and C be employed. 7
The warp cords or threads a are shown arranged in pairs; but it is obvious that they may be separated, if so desired, and the interlacing material or braid a varied and colored to produce an artistic and pleasing effect. In fact, any open pattern of braided or Woven material may be used. As shown in the accompanying drawing, the said interlaced'or interwoven braids or threads a are'alternately passed over and under each warp cord or thread a, and the tension brought to bear upon said braids will gage the arrangement and proximity of the said warp cords or threads.
As hereinbefore referred to,.the warp-cords a and interlaced material a may be either elastic or non-elastic, as may be considered practicable and deemed best for various purposes. When elastic material is used, it is obvious that the interstices or reticulations a will enlarge in dimension when applied, and less of the body of the wearer be covered by the straps. However, when non-elastic material is employed, the said reticulations or interstices will be originally formed of any desired size.
The advantages of the suspender heretofore set forth are many and varied, and will be readily appreciated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a suspender consisting of shoulder-straps formed of warp cords or threads interlaced or interwoven'with braids or threads to form ventilating intersticesor reticulations having adjustable buckles carrying tabs, and a rear tab centrally secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a suspender consisting of shoulder-straps formed of elastic warp-cords interlaced with braids to form ventilating interstices or reticulations having adjustable buckles carrying tabs, and a rear tab centrally secured. thereto, substantially as described. 7 V
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BURKARD GOODMAN.
