ELASTIC BAND OR STRAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,780, dated January 26, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN D. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suflolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Elastic Bands or Straps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

My invention aims to produce a novel elastic fabric adapted to be used in strips or bands for hose-supporters, suspenders, belts, and the like.

My invention will be best understood by a description of one embodiment thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, in face view, shows a section or piece of fabric illustrating one embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2, an enlarged sectional detail on the dotted line 2 2, Fig. 1.

In the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration herein and shown in the drawings, a is a strip of preferably inelastic body fabric of any desired width, to which are applied a plurality of separated strips 5 6 of elastic fabric. In the preferred mode of manufacture the strips of elastic fabric are applied to the body fabric a while under tension, so that when subsequenly freed the contraction or shortening of the said elastic strips to their normal condition will cause the intervening portion of body strip a to be fulled, puckered, or shirred. In the following description and also in the claims the term shirred is used to indicate any fullness or change of configuration of the body which is produced by the natural shortening of the elastic strip or strips or which permits such shortening.

In the present embodiment of my invention the elastic strips 5 are secured to the bodystrip by stitching, (indicated at c 0,) and preferably the elastic strips, if at the edge of the body a, will be carried around the edge of the said body to serve as a binding therefor. Thus the edges of the body a may, if desired, be left raw without impairing the appearance of the completed bound strip.

The elastic strips may be formed in any desired manner; but for various reasons, such as convenience of manufacture and attractive appearance, I prefer to employ an elastic tape or band, such as now commonly employed for hose-supporters and the like, having a suitable woven or braided edge and having incorporated within it a plurality of strands of rubber. r

The body material a may be of any desirec color,design, or character to give to the finished strip or band the desired elastic effect, and by binding the body with elastic strips of harmonious colors and weaves very attractive effects may be produced.

By providing a plurality of separated elastic'strips a certain degree of lateral or collapsible elasticity or softness is obtained which would be lacking in a fabric or band wherein a single wide strip of elastic material only is employed.

When the elastic strips are applied at and surrounding like a binding the edges of the body a, the completed strip or band then presents a similar appearance and constructive effect at both its faces.

The body when of inelastic material while.

permitting elongation of the strip or band serves nevertheless as a means to limit the lengthwise elongation or stretch thereof, thereby to prevent possible injury to the elastic strips by overstretching thereof.

To illustrate the application of one or more elastic strips to the body a between the edges of the latter, as heretofore described, I have indicated one such strip, applied at 0 along the middle of the band, Fig. 1, at each face thereof.

By separating the elastic strips applied as here described to the body lateral collapsibility is not only secured, but the space between the elastic strips along which the body is exposed furnishes a convenient opportunity for insertion therethrough of a pin-such, for instance, as a belt-pinwhen the band is used for belts.

My invention is not limited to the particular embodiment thereof here shown and described, for the same obviously may be varied within the spirit and scope of the invention.
