CORSET-CLOSURE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed August 26. 1905. Serial No. 275.968. Renewed January 31. 1908. Serial No. 413.613.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAOHARY T. HOSKINS, citizen of the United States, residing at Brookhaven, in the county of Lincoln and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset- Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention which relates to an improved closure for corsets, corset waists and the like, has for its object the production of an article of this character adapted to pro vide a maximum elasticity with the consequent freedom of movement to the wearer with the minimum of elastic material, whereby the objections resulting from the use of webbing or the like are entirely overcome. a
The primary object of the invention is to so construct a closure as to provide for the requisite compression at the waist line, and to provide means at the bust and hip lines which will allow of the corset or corset waist yielding at these points under the movements of the wearer, which means consist of elastic lacing arranged to present a minimum area at the points of contact with the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure which will obtain exact conformation of the corset or corset waist to the body of the wearer.
Other objects of the invention are set forth in the following detailed description, and in connection with said description attention is directed to the accompanying drawing illustrating the closure in itspreferred form of embodiment, it being understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without exceeding the scope of the concluding claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a rear view of the corset or corset waist equipped with a closure embodying the invention, certain parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the corset or corset waist in fastened condition.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 designates the corset or corset waist having integral flies 2, 3, each of which flies is formed of the material of the corset or corset waist and is inelastic. The flies are each rovided near its edge with a plurality of eye ets 4 receiving a lacing strin or cord 5. This string or cord may be of e astic or inelastic material dependent upon the leasure of the wearer. Where it is desire to rigidly confine the waist the string or cord will be inelastic, whereas if the corset or corset waist is to yield at the waist line an elastic string or cord is substituted. It will be observed that the flies are of relatively short length and when laced to ether confine the body solely at the waist ine. The back edges 6, 7 of the corset or corset waist are separated from each other for a considerable distance, and between said edges is a back piece or strip 8. The edges 6, 7 of the corset or corset waist and the edges of the back piece or strip 8 are provided with eyelets receiving an upper elastic cord 9 and the lower elastic cord 10. These elastic cords are preferably of small cross sectional area whereby to reduce the amount of elastic material therein to a minimum, and the cords are laced in a .manner to bring the major portion thereof at the outer side or away from contact with the body. These elastic cords are readily replaceable in the event of any loss in elasticity. By reference to Fig. 2, which shows the corset or corset waist in position on the body, the corset or corset waist members are separated from the strip 8 at the bust and hip lines, the extent of separation varying according to the dimensions of these parts of the body, and varying also with the movements of the wearer. While allowing a considerable yield at the lines named, the elastic cord serves to confine the bust and hips and thereby preserve the form of the wearer.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be observed that intermediate of the lacing 9 and 10 the strip is unattached to the corset or corset waist, thereby enabling lacing at the waist line without creasing or buckling of the stri Preferably, the strip is stiffened at each si e of its center by the use of steel, bones or the like, 11, 11. By so disposing the stiffening devices the strip is made to conform more closely to the lateral curvature of the back. In the edges 6, 7 of the corset or corset waist members are stiffening devices 12. It is within the scope of my invention to equip the strip with means for rendering it moisture roof, which means may be a strip of celluoid or equivalent material.
The corset or corset waist may be variously modified and, as above stated, the improved closure may be varied in a number of Ways. For example, inelastic cords may the edges of said members, elastic lacing conbe substituted in certain cases for the elastic necting the strip and members above and cords, whereby to rlgidly confine the bust below said flies, and stiffening devices in said and hips. strip at the sides of the strip center. 5 I claim as my invention In testimony whereof I aifix my signature, 15
