UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HELEN D. DE BEVOSE, OF LONG ISLAND OTY, AND CHARLES R. DE BEVOISE, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
U N DERWAIST.
SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,026, dated October 29, 1889.
Application led July l1, 1889.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, HELEN D. DE BEVOISE and CHARLES R. DE BEvoIsE, both citizens of theUnited States, respectively residing at Long Island Oity and Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Underwaists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to underwaists; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the garment. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the armhole and the re-enforcing piece that connects the shoulderstrap with the band of the waist. Fig. 4 is a section on the line u; of Fig-3.
Similar letters in dicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the body of-the underwaist, which in' this example is made with a close front and an open back, the front being shown in Fig. 1 and the back in Fig. v2, where are shown also the buttons B, that serve to fasten the edges C O of the back to each other. The body of the garnient is surrounded by a band D, which extends from the edge O of the back around to the other edge O', being securely stitched to the body, as indicated in the drawings. The band D may be formed of a continuous strip of inu'slin or other material, or of several shorter strips joined to each other and to the body at their ends, so as practically to form a continuous band. The band D is placed on the body from two to four inches below the armholes E, and from one to two inches above the lower edge of thc body; but we do not restrict ourselves to those distances, as they may be varied according` to the size of the garment or the wish of the maker. The top F of the garment at the front is cut down lower than the top G at the rear by from one and a half to two inches and a half, (more or less,) according` to the size of the garment, so that the front of the garment will not come against or press against the front part of the throat of the wearer.
The upper part of the waist is provided with shoulder-straps H H, which start from and surround the armholes E E, and which Serial No. 317,168. (No model.)
are so made and arranged that at the back of the garment their outer edges J J are nearer to each other, (see Fig. 2) than are their outer edges .T J at thefront, (see Fig. 1,) so that the width of the garment is less across the back than it is at the front. The shoulder-straps H H and the edges of the armholes E E are re-enforced by strips K K, one of which is more fully shown in Fig. 3, which are placed along the outer edges of the shoulder-straps, to which they are securely stitched, as shown, and are extended downward along the edges of the arniholesE E, and thence downward to and under the band D, where they are secured to the body A and the band D by the lines of stitching L. The side buttons M are sewed to the garment by stitching that goes through the band D, as Well as through the body A, and the same is true of the front and rear buttons N. The buttons M N are intended to support such outer garments as may be suspended on them.
O ur improved waist possesses great strength, along with simplicity of construction. The band D serves to strengthen the body of the waist in a uniform manner at points where the strain from outer suspended garments comes upon it. The reenforcing strips K K serve to strengthen the shoulder-straps and the edges ofthe armholes, and by their connection with the band D, the body A of the waist, and the shoulder-straps H, cause the strain of the suspended outer garments to come upon the shoulder-straps, to the conifort of the wearer and the relief of the body A and the band D from undue strain.
'Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An underwaist provided with a surrounding band and having its upper portion provided with shoulder-straps which are overlaid by a continuous reenforcing band surrounding the armhole and extended down the side of the waist under the armhole and stitched at the surrounding band. l
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
