To all whom t may concern,.-

' field, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to corsets, and particularly to the construction of the body-sections and attached parts thereof, the object being to provide in said sections and parts improved means for uniting and strengthening said sections, whereby they better resist the tendency to lose their proper form from the constant use thereof; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of said corset-sections through the embodiment therein of certain novel structural features whereby said object is accomplished. I attain said object by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a corset, illustrating as far as practicable the construction and application of my improvements thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of portions of the adjoining borders of parts of the outer side or covering of said section, illustrating the formation of the vertical seams thereof and improved means applied to said seams for imparting strength and beauty thereto and providing for the reception of additional bone or other stifener, if desired. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line m Fig. 2.

The said several parts 2, forming the outer side of a corset and provided with the usual fastening-eyelets, have heretoforehad their borders united by felled seams only and by a single line or more of stitching. This manner of attaching the parts lacks strength and firmness, and to improve said seam construction improved means are hereby provided for uniting said parts 2, and provision is also made for inserting in said seams a novel strengthening element 5, below described, which has an ornamental effect at the border of said seams and combines also provision for receiving and supporting an additional spring element, such as is above referred to as inserted in said tubular pockets 3, whereby an additional springsupport is given to the corset, acting to prevent undue deflection of the ends thereof. The said additional spring-support, which may be used or not, at the pleasure of the wearer of the corset, is illustrated in its relation to the part of the corset containing the same in Figs. 2 and 3, wherein 2 2 indicate the borders of parts of the surface of the body of the corset andl in which is shown the edges of said borders turned back opposite each other and the free borders of said strengthening element 5 in position between the borders of said parts 2. to be united to the latter by sewing two lines of stitches 0 o therethrough, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.

In Fig. 3 there is also illustrated the strengthening element 5, representingin section in the outer tubular border thereof the position of a strip of whalebone or like elastic or springlike material which may be inserted in thefolded edge of 'said element 5, and thereby serve to impart additional spring force to aid, together with said stiffening-strips of whalebone or other matter which are contained in the said bone-pockets 3, in supporting the corset against an inconvenient degree of deiiection of the upper and lower extremities thereof when worn. Said element is also employed in like manner around the borders of the gores of the corset in the lower border thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a corset, the, usual body parts consisting of several sections, the contiguous borders of which overlap, the edges of said overlapping sections being infolded; a reinforcing member consisting of a flat strip of textile material folded upon itself longitudinally having its edges inserted between the infolded edges of said sections, the parts being so arranged that aline of stitching along the border of the seam will pass through the infolded edge of one section and the single thickness of the other section, and a line of stitching along the other border will pass through the vinfolded edge of one section, the double thickness of the reinforcing member and the single thickness of the other section.

IO will, at one edge, unite the infolded border of one section to the body of the other, and along the other edge thereof will unite the infolded border of one section and the reinforcingmember to the body of the other section, the folded edge of said reinforcing member extending X1 beyond the edge of the seam.
