Description

I. M. BOND.
( No Model.)
CORSET.
Patented Dec. 14, 1897.
ATTORN EY,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IDA M. BOND, OF MONTOLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 595,554, dated December 14, 1897. Application filed March 22, 1897. Serial No. 628,699. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IDA M. BOND, of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in corsets, and particularly 'to that class of corsets in which those portions covering the hips of the wearer are provided with an elastic or yielding material. I
The object of my invention is to produce in a corset a yielding hip-section for the purpose of securing to the wearer a comfortable fit at the hips.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my invention shown in position on the wearer. Fig. 2 is a detail view of my invention, somewhat enlarged.
A is the body of a corset, the same being above the waist-line of any well-known construction. The body of the corset over the hips on each side is recessed or cut away, as shown,.and in this recessed or cut-away portion are secured, as hereinafter described, pieces of elastic or yielding material.
I am aware that it is not new to provide in corsets a yielding material over the hips to give flexibility at that point, and for that reason it is not my purpose to claim that idea broadly. My invention consists, however, in the special construction of the corset at points over the hips, whereby the same is enabled to yield at that point without sacrificing the fit or shape of the garment. The recesses over the hips are cut or formed so as to provide substantially two upright edges a a, separated at a suitable distance from each other and connected by an edge (1*, which preferably curves upwardly to a slight degree. Secured to these edges in the following manthe edge a as shown.
ner are the elastic pieces B B: The piece B is secured at one end to the edge a, while its opposite end and upper edge are secured along The piece B is secured at one end to the edge a, while its opposite end and upper edge are secured along the edge a Thus it will be seen that the pieces B B are diagonal with respect to each other, each of the pieces drawing when stretched in a diagonal as well as in a horizontal line, thus distributing the strain more universally and evenly throughout the lower portion of the corset. While the said elastic pieces B B may be secured by sewing or oth-' erwise to each other at the point where the double thickness is shown, it is not my intention to limit myself to the parts thus secured together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As anew article of manufacture, a corset having a yielding hip portion, comprising a recessed hip-section, two or more pieces of elastic material arranged diagonally with respect to each other, and secured along the edges of said recess, the lines of draft of said pieces against the adjacent edges of the corset-body diagonally crossing'each other.
2, As a new article of manufacture, a corset having yielding hip portions, comprising recessed hip-sections, the inner edge of each recess being curved upwardly, a plurality of elastic pieces secured in said recessed sections along the side and inner edges thereof,
said elastic pieces being arranged diagonally with respect to each other, so that the lines of draft of the several pieces against the adjacent edges of the corset-body will diagonally cross each other.
