CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,312, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed September 7, 1891. Serial No. 404,959. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, MYRON W. SHERMAN, of West Brookfield, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of corsets which are cut with a zone-shaped section extending from the front or busk strip to the rear or eyelet strip, the object of the invention being a construction which will permit this shape or cut in thin or open fabric or fabric of single thickness; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the front or busk strip, which is of usual form, and B the rear or eyelet strip, which is also of usual form.
C represents a transverse section of zone shape which extends from front to rear; D, the section above the Zone, and E the section below the zone. As a means for uniting the zone-section with the sections above and below two segment-shaped sections F and G are formed, extending from front to rear, the sections F and G being of equal width, the section F curved downward and the section G curved upward, corresponding to the shape of the upper and lower edges of the Zone C.
The sections F G are made, as seen in Fig. 2, from two thicknesses of material of equal width from front to rear, and between the adjacent edges of the two sections F G the zonesection C is introduced, the edges of the zonesection extending between the thicknesses of the two segment-shaped sections F G, and lines of stitches a b are run through the sections F G, respectively, and through the corresponding edges of the zone-section C. The upper section D of the corset has its lower edge extending between the upper edges of the two thicknesses of the section F and is there secured by a line of stitches d. The lower section E has its upper edge in like manner introduced'between the lower edges of the section G and there secured by a line of stitches e, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.
The sections C, D, and E are reversely curved at their respective edges.
Stays may be secured to the outer surface of the corset, as desired, and, if preferred, as represented in Fig. l, these stays being stitched to the outer surface of the corset and extending from top to bottom.
By applying the double-thickness segmentshaped sections F G between the upper and lower portions and the zone-section the parts are secured together and present a neat and finished appearance. The construction permits the use of thin lace-like material for the sections C, D, andF. of the corset. The sections F G add to the strength of the corset laterally and permit the cut of the adjacent edges of the said sections C, D, and E in curves from front to rear to give the necessary vertical curvature up and down from the waistline, and also produce strong and durable connections between the said sections C, D, and E, while the overlying stays give the requisite strength vertically. Thus a corset extremely light, but durable, is produced.
I claim- A corset having each half composed of a front or busk strip and a rear or eyelet strip, combined with segment-shaped sections F G, extending transversely from front to rear, the said sections being of substantially equal width from front to rear, the section F curved downward and the section G curved upward, said sections being of two thicknesses of material, the zone-shaped section C, extending from front to rear, with its upper edge secured to the lower edge of the section F and between the two thicknesses of that section F, the lower edge of said zone-shaped section C secured to the upper edge of the section G and between its two thicknesses, the upper section D having its lower edge secured to the upper edge of the section F and between its two thicknesses, and the lower section E having its upper edge secured to the lower edge of the section G and between its two thicknesses, the sections C, D, and E being reversely curved at their respective edges, substantially as described.
