UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JAMES C. ANDREWS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BAY STATE CORSET CO., OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPO- RATION.
$PECIFICATION formingpart Of Letters Patent NO. 698,166, dated April 22, 1902. Application filed September 16, 1901. Serial No. 75,445. (No model.)

to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a broken face view of the upper part of a corset, illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view on lines a b of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, having particular reference to finishing corsets and to reinforcing the face of the same to prevent cutting of the garment by the ends of the steels; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
The corset A, which may be of any approved construction, is provided with the usual steels B, more or less in number, these steels extending nearly to the upper end of the garment. Over the upper edge of the garment is a binder C. This binder overlaps the opposite face of the corset and is secured thereto by a line of stitches a, the stitches passing through the garment above the ends of the steels B. This binder is formed with a flap which extends down over the upper ends of the steels, but is not attached to the garment, except as it is secured by the stitches a. As a finish for the garmentastrip of lace edging E or other suitable material is inserted beneath the flap D and is secured by the said line of stitches a, the edging being inserted before the binder isstitched, so that but one operation is necessary to complete and finish the corset. This flap being free from the face of the corset does notstiifen the upper edge, but extending over the upper ends of the steels prevents them from being exposed and so cutting the outer garment of the wearer should the steels cut through the face of the corset. This flap being a part of the binder and secured in position at the time the ornamental strip is attached does not increase the expense of the corset, but materially improves the appearance of the same;
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a corset having vertically-arranged steels extending nearly to the upper edge thereof, of abinding-strip secured to the upper edge of the corset by a line of stitches above the upper ends of said steels, said binding-strip formed with a flap extending downward on the face of the corset over the upper ends of said steels, and an ornamental strip secured to the corset between the binding-strip and the face thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
