GARMENT FOUNDATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma 2a, 1916.
Application filed lime 11,1912. semi No. 703,074.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ALEXANDRE M. GREAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment Founda tions, of which the following'is a specification. i r
The present invention relates to garment foundations, particularly those for waists, and the like, and the primary object is to provide an article of manufacture, which can be made in different sizes, and can be easily and quickly adjusted to the peculiaritiesof forms of the difierent wearers of the respective sizes, thus making the same most economical in the manufacture of garments by dressmakers, and the like.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the body blank. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, with the girdle section detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the complete article. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the girdle section. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same on an enlarged scale, illustrating the shaped formation of the belt. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a portion of the belt blank.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The sub'ect-matter of the invention is an article of manufacture, and comprises abody 1, preferably, though not necessarily, formed of a single piece of material, having a neck opening 2 and arm-holes 3. It may be open in front or back, inthe-present embodiment, being illustrated as opening in the back. The shoulder portions 4: in this body, are complete. The only seams are two, designated 5, which extend from the lower portions of the arm-holes downwardly to the lower edge of the body. These seams are incomplete, or in other words, the sections 6 and 7 on opposite sides of the same, are relatively adjustable, so as to permit the expansion or contraction of the foundation below the arms. The two sections 6 and 7 may be entirely separated, that'is, detached from each other, or in order to maintain the shape of the foundation for transportation purposes, and the like, they may be merely basted together.
In addition to the above described'body section, a girdle section. 8 is employed, that is in the form of a belt, permanently and transversely curved or shaped. As a result of the transverse curvature, it will be evident that the central portion of the belt is of less diameter than the marginal portions, or in other words, of less circumference, and consequently the central portion of the belt is shorter than the longitudinal margins of the same above and below said central portion. This section is vertically adjustable on the body, in order that the same may be properly fitted to wearers having short or long waists. Permanently secured to this girdle section, are transversely disposed bones 9 that may be differently arranged and project either above or below the belt, or on both sides of the same, and being also preferably of different lengths, those at the back and front being the longest. For the purpose of packing and transportation, the girdle section is also preferably basted to the body so that it can be easily detached and properly positioned upon the wearer. It will be noted also that the said girdle section bridges the seams 5.
With this article, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that the foundation of a waist or similar garment can be properly fitted with ease and expedition, the ar rangement being such that the portions below the arms can be varied, not only in diameter, but in length, while the remaining or upper portions being complete, will require no change.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any advantages of the invention.
Having thus full described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a garment foundation formed from asinglepiece of material having a neck opening, armholes, seamless portions between the armholes and neck openings, and two seams extending downwardly from the armholes to the lower end of the foundation, said seams being incomplete and permitting the adjacent portions of the foundation on opposite sides of the same to be adjusted to different degrees with respect to each other.
2. As an article of manufacture, a garment foundation including a permanently shaped belt that is permanently curved in a transverse direction, and a plurality of longitudinally curved bones secured directly to the curved belt transversely thereof at separated points.
3. As an article of manufacture, a garment foundation, including a belt that is permanently curved in atransverse direction, a plurality of bones located trans- Copies' 01 this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the nesses.v
