Description

PATENTED JULY 7, 1908.
J. J. MEEHAN. SHAPING DEVICE FOR OOLLARS.
.M Wm M W m m m JOHN J. MEEHAN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
SHAPING DEVICE FOR COLLARS.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 1908.
Application filed August 10, 1906. Serial No. 329,566.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN J. MEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shapim Devices for Collars; and Ido declare the fbllowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference markedthereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
My invention relates to im rovements in shaping or stiffening means or soft collars being more especially intended for use in connection .with turn down collars, the stiffening means being applied to the outer flap or member whereby the said flap is stiffened and shaped, giving it the appearance of a laundered collar; while the inner flap of the collaror that next to the neck of the wearer, remains perfectly soft and pliable, thus givin the wearer all the advantages of a soft co lar so far as comfort is concerned, and at the same time giving the outer flap of the collar a laundered appearance due to the stiffening or sha in 'evice which is concealed within the said ap. This shapingdevice is removable from't'he outer flap of the collar through a slit left therein at the lower edge or formed in any suitable part of the flap.
Having briefi outlined my improved con struction, as we 1 as the function it is intended to perform, I will proceed to describe the same in detail reference being made to the accom anying drawing in which is illustrated an em odiment thereof.
In this drawin Figure 1 is an elevation of a turn down co lar provided with my improvement, the shapin device bein indicated by dotted lines. 1 lar is shown in the flat position, that is to say with both fia s occu yin the same lane. Fig; '2 is a detail view of tie sha ing device. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a collar s own folded and in the position when in use, the sha ing device being also in this case indicate by dotted lines. v
nthis view t e col- The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a turn down collar havin the outer flap A and the inner flap B of orinary construction. As shown in the drawing I have left a portion of the two thicknesses of the outer fla of the collar unsewed at the lower ed e as s own at Cto permit the insertion of t 1e stifieni'ng device 6 which is shaped to conform to the general shape of the outer flap of the collar but constructed to occupy a position between the two thicknesses of the said flap.
The shaping device 6 may be composed of metal or any other material sufficiently stiff to perform the shaping function. As shown in the drawing the central art of the device is cut away as shown at D, 1n order to'reduce its weight. The device thus cut away per forms t 1e desired function, though it may be made of-a continuous piece of sheet material if desired. i
In the drawin I have shown the shaping device composed of two members 6", one member having two pairs of lips E turned inwardly on one side to receive the extremities F of the other member, whereby the shaping device is made longitudinally adjustable thus adapting it for use with collars of varying length.
Having thus described I claim is:
A turn down collar having a shaping device concealed within the outer flap thereof, the said device being composed of a plurality of members the extremities of one of the members being provided with lips turned inwardly thereupon. permitting longitudinal adjustment whereby the device may be adapted for use with collars of varying len th.
n testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
my invention, what Witnesses:
DENA NELSON, FRANK HosKEn.
JOHN J. MEEHAN.
