COLLAR-EASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Applcationled July 28, 1916.. Serial No. 111,911.
To all whomc't mag/- cocinera:
Beit lrnowrr that 13d/VILLARD A.r HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle,in the-county of: King1and State of l/Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gollar-Fasteners,of which the following is a specification'. l
This invention relates to-'a collar fastener which may be used for connecting either a soft, turn-down, or standingcollarto the band of a. shirt.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character which may be stamped fromv a sheet of material and bent in such a manner that when applied to* al collar, the;V4 same may be easily and quickly connected with or disconnected from the bandL of' a shirt without the necessity of passing a` portion of the fastener through the button-h'olel inthe shirt band.
Another object of the inventiony is to'provide a'fastener which is so constructed that when applied'- to a collar of' the standing type and the collar connected with theshirt band byl meansy of thefastener, the tie may beheld in its proper position onl the` collar by a tongue on the fastener.
A further object ofy the invention is to provide a fastener* havinglthe' portion thereof which is passed through the button-hole of a collar so shaped that itmav he usedlin connection with collars having either a vertical or horizontal button-hole and when passed therethrough will lie fiat against the collar thus preventing the collar from causing the button to contact with the back of the neck of the wearer of the collar and causing discomfort.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularlypointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a fastener constructed inaccordanoe with-the invention.
Fig. 2 isa view"in\ele`vation of a portion of a collar of the turn-down type showing the improved fastener applied thereto.
-Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 o f Fig. 2,` and` showing the fastener connected with a shirt band. H
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 8' showing the fastener connected with a shirt band and with a standing collar, the retaining tongue onthe fastener being engaged with ay portion of atie. y
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the improved fastener connected with a collar of the turn-downI type having a vertical button-hole therein.
Figxfi is ay plan viewl of the blank from which the fastener is formed.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeraly 1 designates the improved fastener which may be stamped from anyy suitable material, suchas metal, or the like, land has a body 2 iny the` form of an elongated loop havingk rounded end 3 and spaced sides i converging for aportion of their lengthto meet at the other? end of the loop.
The body 2 is folded upon itself-between its ends as at 5 to form portions 6 adapted to be received beneath theVr iap 7 on= the shirt'y band 8.
The meeting ends of the converging portions of the sides 4l terminate in an eXtension 9 which is folded upon the converging portion of the sides 4 at its juncture therewith to form a neck 10 adapted to be passed through a button-hole B in a collar C.
The other end of the extension terminates in an enlargement forming a substantially elliptical shaped head 11, recessed, as at 12 to provide a tie engaging tongue 13 said head 11 having its free end bent to form a retaining lip 14 extending at right-angles to the head 11 and arranged between the converging portions of the sides i of the loop or body 2.
When it is desired to use the fastener for connecting a collar of the turn-down type with the band of a shirt as shown in the drawing, the tie is placed between the folds of the collar in the usual manner.
The head 11 and extension 9 on the imroved fastener are passed through the button-hole B of the collar until the neck 10 is received therein and retaining lip la brought into contact with the button edge of the collar beneath the button-hole, said lip preventing upward movement of the extension 9 and head ll through the buttonhole B.
With the collar secured to the baelr of the shirt by the improved fastener as shown in Fig. 3 in the drawing, it will be seen that the extension Q and head l1 contact with the inner fold of the collar throughout their length so that the tie is free to be drawn about the collar and between the folds thereof while being tied without being caused to bind between the folds by the extension 9 and head 1l.
lVhen the improved fastener is used to connect a standing collar withthe band of a shirt as shown in F ig. et in the drawing, the improved fastener is connected with tliercollar in a similar manner to that described for attaching the fastener to a collar of the turn-down type with the exception that the tie engaging tongue 13 is bent to extend slightly beyond the head ll so thatwhen the tie is tied about the collar, the tongue will engage with thertie and retain the same in place upon the collar so that the tie will be held from upward movement upon the collar should the knot therein become loosened.
By bending the fastener as described and forming the body thereof which is connected with the flap on the shirt band fromthe looped portion of the fastener, it will be seen that the fastener is so shaped that when connected with a collar of the turn-down type, the portions of the fastener which are arranged between the shirt band and the folds insane@ of the collar require very little room so that the tie is free to slide between the folds of the collar and that thelooped portion of the fastener will not press upon the bones in the neel; and cause discomfort to the wearer of the collar.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a fastener for the purpose set forth has been provided which is simple Vin construction, therefore inexpensive of manufacture, yet highly etlicient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
l. A collar fastener comprising an attaching loop, an extension at one end of the loop lyinO` in a plane parallel thereto and adapted to pass through the button-hole of a collar Y and extend below said hole, an enlargement at the lower end of said extension having a tie engaging tongue thereon, and a lip on said enlargement adapted to underlie the edge of the collar beneath the button-hole therein.
2. A collar fastener comprising an elongated loop having a curved end and sides converging from the medial portion of the loop toward the other end thereof, said loop being folded upon itself, an extension at the smaller end of said loop lying in a plane parallel thereto, an enlargement at the free end of said extension having an opening therein, a tongue on said enlargement to lie within said opening, and a lip at one end of the enlargement extending laterally there` from.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
