To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY T. LOOMIS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to neck ties, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class particularly designed .for use in dressing a corpse for burial, and

with this and other objects in view the illvention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

My invention consists principally in a device adapted to be secured to an ordinary bow tie and forming a part of said tie when complete, and by means of which the tie is secured in position for use, or to the neck portion of a burial robe or garment.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of the blank which I employ and from which my improvement is made, said device being cut from a sheet of flexible material preferably metal; Fig. a side view showing the separate parts of the blank shown in Fig. 1 folded into position for use; Fig. 3 a front view of an ordinary bow tie partly made up; Fig. 4 a plan view of a strip of material used in connection with the incomplete tie shown in Fig. 3 and forming the central part of said tie as shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 5 a front view of a complete tie; Fig. 6 a plan view thereof, and ;Fig. 7 a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6 and on an enlarged scale.

In the practice of my invention I cut from a sheet of metal the blank shown in Fig. 1 and comprising a central body portion a provided at two opposite sides with flexible tongues b, which extend in opposite directions and at the other two opposite sides with radially arranged flexible tongues c, which also extend in opposite directions, and at right angles to the tongues b, and the body portion a is also provided at the opposite sides of the tongues c with shorter tongues d parallel therewith and adjacent thereto, and the tongues d are provided at their outer side edges with teeth In practice the blank shown in Fig. 1, or the separate parts thereof are folded as shown in Fig. 2, the central part a forming the body of the device, while the longer tongues c are bent together at one side, and the tongues b at right angles to the body portion at the opposite side, while the tongues d project in their normal or first named position. I

In Fig. 3 I have shown at e an ordinary bow tie complete with the exception of the central transverse knot member, and in practice the attaching device is placed on the central back portion of the tie, and the tongue members 6 folded forwardly around it as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The central transverse knot member f shown detached in Fig. 1, and in use in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 is then folded transversely around the tie e from the front thereof, and the ends thereof brought together at the back as shown at f in Fig. 7, after which the tongues 05 of the attaching or fastening device are folded transversely of the end portions of the part f, the ends of the same tongues overlapping as clearly shown in Fig. 6, and said tongues are pressed tightly on to each other and on to the folded ends of the part f, and the teeth 6Z2 enter said part. The tie is then complete and ready for use and in connecting it with a burial gown or garment, or the neck portion thereof, the flexible tongues c are used, the said tongues being passed through the buttonhole or other aperture and then expanded or separated as will be readily understood, and in the manner of ordinary paper fasteners.

By means of my improvement I provide a neck tie for the purpose specified, which has all the appearance of a custom made tie, or a tie of the same class made in the usual manner, and which may be made without any stitching or sewing and which may also be easily and quickly secured in position for use when desired, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificlng its advantages.
