Description

PATEN'TED AUG. 25, 1908.
SAY W190? "6100010011 A. SWANSON. DETAGHABLE BOW TIE. 'APPLIOATIQK FILED DEC. 26, 1907.
ALFRED SWANSON, OF ALBUQUERQUE, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
DETACHABLE BOW-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed December 26, 1907. Serial No. 408,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SwANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De tachable Bow-Ties and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to articles of personal wear, and especially to detachable neck ties.
It is the object of the invention to provide a tie which may be readily put together and when in completed form, easily attached to and detached from the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tie of this character which is adjustable to different sized collars.
With these objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the device attached to a collar Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the device detached, and with the tongue swung up 011 its supporting loop; Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are fragmentary perspective views of the loop detached from the folded ends of the ties.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 represents a strip of suitable material, which is folded to form the ends, 2, and the loops, 3, of the ordinary bow tie. These loops may be bound together by stitching, or may be loose so as to be adjusted to suit the wearer, but I prefer to construct the tie so that it cannot be disarranged in any manner.
Surrounding the folded ends, 2, and the loops, 3, is a strip of material, 4, which has secured to one extremity thereof a sheet of metal, 5, bent upon itself to form clamping ends to be hereinafter described.
In assembling the tie, the strip of material, 4, is attached to the metallic member, 5, which rests upon the back of the tie and is in dependent therefrom. The stri 4 is then passed around over the front 0' the folded ends and is then inserted through the metallic member, 5, and extended some distance beyond where it is passed through a slot, 6, in a tongue, 7, of any suitable material. The
free end is then run through the metallic member 5 in the opposite direction to its first insertion and looped across over the metallic member, as shown in Fig. 4, and again inserted through the same side so as to form a covering for the metallic member. The tongue, 7, is provided with a pair of button holes, 8 and 9, by which the device is attached to a collar. When the necktie is in place, the tongue 7 is folded down behind the loop, 10, formed by the folding of'the strip 4 and one of the button holes is engaged by the collar button 11.
T he button holes 8 and 9 permit the use of the device with several different sized collars, and. it is therefore unnecessary to manufacture different sized tongues. The lower end of the tongue when the device is in place, is covered by the tie and the upper end. is covered by the collar, the intermediate portion between the upper ends being covered by the loo 10, so that no part of the tongue is exposec to view, and the tie is held in proper position with the collar button completely covered.
While it is evident that I have illustrated my invention in connection with a bow tie, I wish it known that the device might equally be applied to puff ties and the like without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is: 7
- 1. A detachable bow tie comprising a body portion, a loop extending therefrom, and an attaching device carried by the loo and provided with a plurality of button hdles.
2. A detachable bow tie comprising a body portion, a metallic fastener, a strip of fabric extending around the body portion and provided with a loop, said strip being secured upon the body portion by the metallic fastener, and a tongue connected to the loop, said tongue adapted to be hidden when the tie is attached to the collar by the tie, said. tongue being provided with a plurality of button holes.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IIQSSGS.
ALFRED SWANSON.
