SCRF AND NECKTIE.
ramera.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lll/lay 29, 1917.
Application led May 26, 1916. Serial No. 99,934.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA SoHLoERB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVeehawken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarfs and Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ornamental neck wearing apparel known as scarfs or` neckties, and its principal object is to provide means whereby the knot, bow or other form given the ends may be easily held in a desired position.
This objectis attained by the design and construction of the clasp or clip hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in whichz- Figure l is a perspective view of a common form of scarf tie, showing the applica- 'tion of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view showing the same scarf before the clasp has been K clasp.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 is applied to the downwardly extending ends of the scarf, the same being usually broader than the band 11 which encircles the neck or collar. f
The ends of the scarf are extended downward, one being merely folded over the other forming a loose knot with the band, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the clasp 12, considered as a whole, is passed upward enveloping the pendant ends l0 of a scarf to a point closely below the band 11.
The clasp is preferably covered with the same material of which the tie is made, and in its extended position, as shown in Fig. 4, will be seen to consist of a narrow strip of the material 14 having hemmed or inturned upper and lower edges, respectively 15 and 16, within the hems of which are inserted stifening elements 18 comprised of a textile fabric enveloping a pair of pliable wires 20, held firmly in position by stitching or otherwise, so that when inserted in the hems 15 and 16 and the hemmed side edge 21, the extended clasp is materially reinforced and by reason of the pliability of the inclosed wires will retain any shape given it.
When the sti'ening elements are' fixed within the clasp, the opposite end 22 is folded over the edge 21, forming -in effect a hollow cone as indicated in Fig. 3, which, by reason of the pliability of the wires 20 may be given any desired shape, as round, oval, or flattened with parallel sides.
Thus, for instance, if it be preferred for the extending ends of the scarf to lie relatively iat, the clasp 12 will accommodate itself without difliculty, or by manipulating the clasp with the fingers, any other desired formation may be readily given.
By reason of the conical shape of the clasp it will be held in position on the fabric of the tie without any form of fastening although it will be evident that a pin 23 as ordinarily used may be inserted holding the scarf and clasp so as to prevent any possible slipping.
From the foregoingit will be apparent that this clasp forms an exceptionally useful adjunct to the toilet of ladies and gentlemen, avoiding the making up of knots and consequent wear of the scarf.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a scarf tie, the combination with a band adapted to encircle the collar and having broad pendant ends extending therefrom, of a conical shaped clasp adapted to engage exterioraly of said ends, pliable sti'fening elements secured on the top and bottom of said clasp and similar pliable elements extending vertically between the upper and lower edges of said clasp, sa1d pliable elements being adapted to retain the shape given to the clasp.
2. In a scarf tie, clasp, the combination with a fabric covering having hemmed upper and lower edges, pliable metallicelements inserted in the hems of said edges,
5 means for securing said covering adapted to form, a hollow cone, and pliable stili'ening elements disposed longitudinally between said upper and lower stiffening elements whereby a given shape may be maintamecl.
Signed at Union, in the county of Hudson 1o ANNA SCHLOERB.
