SAFETY OVERALL POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 192-2.
Application filed December 29, 1919. Serial No. 348,063.
T 0 all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, ALoNzo S. BLowERs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portland, in the county of Jay, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Safety Overall. Pocket, of which the following is a full, clear, and comprehensive specification and exposition, the same being such as will enable others to construct the same with exactitude.
The object of my present invention, broadly speaking, is to provide a safety pocket for overalls or the like, the same being simple in construction, neat in appear ance, easily and quickly applied during the manufacture of the garment with which it is connected, the same being positive in the accomplishment of the objects for which it is intended, and in which the cost thereof will be practically nil.
The specific objects and advantages of the invention will be brought out and made clear in the following description, and that which is new and useful will be correlated in the appended claims.
The preferred means for carrying out my invention in a practical manner is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the bib of a garment with my invention applied thereto in operative position. Figure 2 is a perspective view of a portion of my invention as applied in operative position. Figure 3 is a detail cross section, as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. And Figure 1 is a detail cross section, as taken on the line 4.-t of Figure 1.
Similar indices denote like parts throughout the several views.
In order that the construction. the operation, and the advantages of my invention may be the more fully understood and ap-- preciated I will now take up a detailed de scription thereof, in which I will set forth the several features as fully and as comprehensively as I may.
My invention is adapted to be employed in connection with the bib of overalls, the bib being formed in two equal sections, A and B, which are united on a medial vertical line where they are attach together by the two parallel lines of stitching C and D.
The pocket is formed by two distinct pieces of material: the minor member 1 and the major member 2. The member 1 is in the nature of a straight oblong strip secured in vertical position, the left-hand edge of member 1 being secured between the edges of the members A and B by means of the stitching C and D, that is to say,- when the adjoining edges of the members and B are united the edge of the memher 1 is at the same time secured there between, as shown in Figs. 8 and at.
The member 2 is of the same length as the member 1, but it is considerably wider, and its upper right hand corner is truncated, as indicated by the line as.
The left-hand edge of member 2 is turned under upon itself, or hemmed, and secured by the two lines of stitching y and a.
The said hemmed edge of the member 2 extends over the right hand portion of member 1, the ends thereof being even with each other.
The lower half of the members 1 and 2 are permanently secured together by the stitching y and .2, but above the central portion, that is above the reinforcement 4, they are not connected, except at the extreme upper edge where they are connected by the lateral line of stitching o, by which the upper edges of both members 1 and 2 are attached to the member B of the bib.
The angular edge is turned under and secured to the member B, except at its lower portion, by the stitching Q0. The vertical right-hand edge of member 2 is likewise secured to the member B by stitching s, and the lower edges of the members 1 and 2 are turned under and secured to the member B by stitching (Z. Letter 6 denotes a line of stitching located parallel with the stitching s and a short distance to the left thereof. thereby forming a pocket for the pencil H. as the stitching 4/ extends only from the stitching e to the stitching a At the junction of the stitching c and 'w is a re inforcement 5. And at the junction of the stitching s and the angular line as, that is at the right-hand edge of the pencil pocket, is the reinforcement 6.
It will be obvious that the only opening into the main pocket is through the vertical mouth K, and that an article placed in the pocket through said mouth can not inadvertently fall out when the wearer Stoops forward or bends from side to side.
I desire that it be understood that various changes may be made in the several details of construction without departing from the lower and left-hand edges, the left band edge of the minor member being secured between the edges of the members of the bib, the major member of the pocket being of the same length as the minor member but formed considerably wider and its left hand corner portions are truncated, a hem formed at the left hand edge of the major portion said hem being secured by two lines of stitching, the said hemmed edge of the major portion being arranged to extend over the right hand portion-of the minor member with the ends thereof located even. with each other, lines of stitching for permanently securing together the lower half of the minor and the major members only, whereby a pocket mouth is formed above said lines of stitching, and reinforcements located at the ends of the mouth to the pocket and at the ends of said truncated corner, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
