Description

R. W. GRAHAM. CONVERTIBLE WAISTBAND CLOSURE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 21, 1911.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
wvmwooeo ROBERT W. GRAHAM, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONVERTIBLE WAISTBAND-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 21, 1911.
Patented Mar. 4:, 1913. Serial No. 650,614.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Waistband-Closures; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to waist band 010' sures and more especially to closures for waist bands of trousers and similar garments.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective closure for convertible waist bands such as that shown and described in my application Serial No. 618,014, filed March 80, 1911 and which is designed as an improvement over the closure shown in said application to reduce the thickness at the meeting ends of the band.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a detail perspective view of the top of a pair of trousers with this improved closure applied and with the placket open; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof with the placket closed; and the waist band folded over. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the band and the fastening elements in closed position. Fig. 4 is a front view of the top of the trousers and band showing one end of the latter turned back to more clearly illustrate the fastening elements.
In the embodiment illustrated the invention consists of a convertible waistband A such as described and shown in my application referred to, said band being adapted to be folded upon the outer surfaces of the garment. The waistband is preferably formed by folding a strip of material longitudinally and securing the inner and outer members B and C together intermediate of their width by a longitudinal line of stitching D, said row of stitching terminating at a point spaced from the ends of said band thereby leaving the inner and outer members of said band separated at their ends as shown in Fig. 1, whereby one of the sections forming the placket of the garment is provided with a fly or flap E. The placket terminates substantially on a line with the lower secured edge of the band and is adapted to be removably and detachably located between the adjacent section of the garment and detached end of the band thereof.
The closures for the ends of the band comprise two fastening devices or elements 1 and 2 secured to the inner detached faces of both members of one end of the band and cooperating fastening devices or elements 3 and 4: secured respectively to the outer and inner faces of the opposite end of the band beyond the edges of the fly E. The fastening device 1 preferably in the form of a hook is secured to the inner face of the outer member B and the fastening device 2 preferably in the form of an eye is secured to the inner face of the end of the inner member C. The cooperating fastening devices 3 and 4 which are secured to the outer end of the band preferably comprise an eye 3 secured to the outer face of the outer member B and adapted to be engaged by the hook 1 on the outer end of said band and a hook 4 secured to the inner face of the inner member C and cooperating with the eye 2 on the inner face of the inner member C at the other end of the band. As shown the upper end of the fly E terminates on a line with the lower edge of the band and is received between the detached ends of the members B andC at the end of said band opposite to that to which the fly is attached. When the ends of the band are so connected the end edges of the inner member C of the band abut and one end of the outer member B at one end of the band overlaps the fly E to reduce the thickness of the meeting ends of the band, thus forming a neat closure for the inner and outer members of the band to adapt either member to be exposed and to avoid any unnecessary thickness at this point and the parts are flexibly connected and overlapped. r
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a garment, of a placket separating the upper sections of the same and having a fiy forming a part of one section, a waist band adapted to be folded upon the outer surface of the garment, said placket terminating substantially on a line with the lower edge of the band and adapted to be removably and detachably located between the adjacent section of the garment and detached end of the band thereof, whereby the parts are flexibly connected and overlapped, and fastening devices for connecting the ends of said band, one member of said fastening devices being attached to the inner detached faces of one end of the band, and the other members secured respectively to the outer and inner surfaces of the opposite end of the band beyond the edge of the fly.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT WV. GRAHAM.
